Designed to face the Borg threat the small Defiant Class vessels are the first real warships 
of Starfleet. 

After the first Borg encounter Starfleet decided to build a fleet of small ships
capable to fight the Borg. A prototype was built, the USS Defiant, but some intitial 
tests showed that the ship was overpowered and overgunned, nearly tearing itself apart 
in the flight maneuvers. The project was cancelled and the USS Defiant remained uncompleted
until she was assigned to Deep Space Nine to defend the station from the Dominion.

The DS9 crew added some equipment like ablative armour and raised the speed limit (through 
recalibrating the structual integrity field) to Warp 8.7

After the success of the prototype the project was resumed and more Defiant Class vessels 
will be built.
