kismet-north atlantic balkan express rating: 3

A blend of Dead Can Dance-like aboriginal music and modern electro/industrial, Kismet's music is consistently above average, maintaining a respectable standard of innovation and quality throughout, while never quite reaching the point of being outstanding or catchy. The band's strongest point is the use of various instruments atypical of the electronic and industrial scene in combination with the usual synthesizers and electronic loops; furthermore, the vocals on their songs mesh and harmonize better with the instruments than in the work of comparable performers.

The album contains covers of Joy Division's "Love Will Tear us Apart", and a Pink Floyd instrumental piece, which are notable primarily for their creative instrumentation. The real appeal of North Atlantic Balkan Express is their unique synthesis of vocals, traditional folk instruments from disparate cultures, and synthesizers. The songs with English lyrics tend towards surrealism, and have less of an effect than those with lyrics in foreign languages; when one listens to the song "War", sung entirely in a foreign tongue, the combination of the language and the innovative combination of instruments produces something that sounds both evocative and completely alien.
