To those of you thinking about signing up for the Board a small note...

Choose your Nickname carefully as you cannot change it later on, and neither can we as Admins change it for you.

Use a VALID Email Address or else your registration CANNOT be completed!

Also... do NOT sign up for several accounts. Nickname squatting is considered undesirable behaviour and we will remove all accounts as such.

Please do not sign up if you intend to pose a question and then never return, that's kind of pointless.

Every so many months we will probably clean out the user database too, so if you're not thinking of ever posting you might want to reconsider signing up. The reading of the board is not restricted to those who have registered, so even as a guest you can read everything.

We can modify most things extensively, just not change Nicknames. Why, I don't know... we work within the limits of the program.

From my understanding of this script, Ikonboard uses the unique member names to allocate member ID's. This is how it identifies each individual member (whereas some scripts use email addresses instead of usernames), and it is the basic foundation of how the script functions. The "super admins" have massive control over every feature of the board, but there are some things that are just an integral part of the running of a script, and these things cannot be easily changed. They may bring out an upgrade some day that allows members to change usernames, but I can't see that happening any time soon (esp. as it would probably involve major rewrites of some parts of the script).

Actually, there's a hack out there for iB v3.0.X that allows you to change user names globally. If you want it, I can find you the file.

Or you could go through the painstaking task of matching up the username with ID and changing it. In theory, no?

I would hate to swim through that code to appease someone who decided to change there name. Go for the ``hack``.

Nah. I prefer people to just use a modicum of their intelligence and consider their username with care, it's not as though the board is overrun and all the good names are taken. I think I can expect that much effort from people to choose carefully.

Also, as it is a hack, there is no telling how such a hack may affect the board and it's other code and considering the time and effort it takes to set up the board, I'd not want to risk having something fuck it up so we can start from scratch.

Every couple of months I intend to weed out all the people who have registered nicknames and have never posted in the months they've been registered so as to avoid nickname squatting. Even as a non-registered member one can read all the sections of the board as that's not restricted to registered members only.

Which also has its issues, security ones if I'm not mistaken.

Though we are considering it, due to the fact that iB isn't being updated/maintained as frequently as it used to, if I remember correctly. iB has also brought with it a slew of issues and hassles.

However, unless things like users and posts can be imported the option still isn't an appealing one.
