Silent Dating
/div wrote: The idea is simple: People come to a club where the soundtrack consists of soothing strains of instrumental music interspersed with white-noise sound effects like waterfalls and chirping birds. Tables are littered with pens and pads of paper. And rather than engaging in too-fast, too-furious chitchat, men and women -- prohibited from speaking -- engage instead in note-passing, doodling, and clever written banter that's less instant than an instant message, but more immediate than e-mail. Plus, rather than using those goofy =)s and leering s, you can actually smile and wink to your heart's content.
This reminds me of "internet dating", except more personal. I think it sounds great for people who go to clubs looking for someone with common interests rather than loud noise and someone to grind with. I also think this sounds a lot better than the "speed dating" trend where you only spend a minute or two with someone.

Er... I don't think that I would ever want to do things that way. It seems so... sterile and awkward.
What's with the extremes? Speed dating???? wtf is that? o_O;
Whatever happend to just regular dating? Y'know, you meet someone, make with the small talk, hang out and let things progress from there?

Speed dating is similar to this method except that instead of writing to each other you have like 2 minutes to talk to each other and discover common interest with the person across the table. After that people rotate and the process is restarted. Its very impersonal which is one of the many reasons I won't be doing it.

Yeah, speed dating has seemed like crap ever since I heard about it. I mean, how much can you learn about someone in 2 minutes, and why in the world would you want to "date" over 10 people in one night? The people on the show I saw were just raving about what a good time they had, but I don't see any fun in it, especially when you can't stay with one person all night and gossip about other people.

Both speed dating and silent dating sound like quite possibly the most wankiest ideas I have ever come across.

I really can't see speed dating or silent dating taking the place of good, old fashioned 'getting to know someone'. What ever happened to "you want to go and see a movie?"

Hmm maybe all this instant dating is just playing on the ridiculous idea that you need to be with someone or you are not normal. Personally I don't see the point in dating for the sake of dating. If you meet somone you hit it off with great but why kill youself searching for someone the best ones always turn up when you aren't looking anyway!

This just seems silly to me. I can't think of any better word to describe it.
Also, what if you have shitty handwriting like mine? Of course that might produce some humorous misunderstandings.

It sounds like something they would have done at a Dada convention.

What's wrong with the whole old-fashioned "Hi, how are you?" and two weeks later going out dating? I mean, honestly. Any date that has rules has restrictions, and that's just plain silly. Not to mention that if I ever did do that, I would just throw down the pen and say "Screw it!" and talk. Rules are great for keeping things in order, but since when is talking unorderly? Besides, body language is most of communication. And when you are using a pen and paper rather then your voice, you lose some of that body language, aka your voice and you talking. Really, I don't understand all of these new dating schemes. Eh...blargh.
