I saw the name Tom Lehrer mentioned in another thread so I know at least one person knows this guy's music... anyone else? If you don't, you really should -- very funny stuff (though occasionally gross, but we can cope with that )

Tom Lehrer is an extremelly funny guy. I think one of my favourites of his songs would have to be The Masochism Tango. OTOH, Poisoning Pigeons in the Park] and We Will All Go Together When We Go are pretty good as well. Come to think of it, I don't think I've heard anything of his that I don't like. Nothing that springs to mind, anyway.

VM, he sings stuff poking fun at, err, anyone and everyone really.
Personal favorites include Poisoning Pigeons in the Park, We Will All Go Together When We Go, and It Makes a Fellow Proud to be a Soldier. (:

He also composed that song about the periodic table of elements. He seems to be part of a lost art form along with the likes of Flanders and Swan. There's just no more place for music hall shenanigans in todays modern world
If I'm wrong and this art form is still being propagated I would be delighted if someone rectified my assumption.

As far as I know you're right, Numen, more's the pity.
Ahhh the elements -- that was set to music from the Pirates of Penzance by Gilbert and Sullivan, and his altered lyrics made about as much sense as the original "modern major general" set of words

Well face it, with the exception of the last line, the lyrics consisted entirely of the periodic table. Although not in order if I recall correctly.
And these are the only ones of which the news has come to Harvard. And there may be many others but they haven't been discarvered.
(Not a misspelling there, that's how he does it)
Doth, who is going to have to dig out the Tom Lehrer music tonight

I think it's time for me to burst into laughter
(and build a time-machine so I can go back in time to the precise moment when your friend asked the teacher, to get the teacher's expression on tape; whether it was a joke on your friends behalf or not)

As it turns out, the teacher said perfectly seriously that yes, there is an element called californium. :p
