Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep was mentioned recently in the "Print" forum ....

Of course that movie was made into "Bladerunner" ... another Phillip K Dick book-to-movie was "Total Recall" ...

And the upcoming Steven Spielberg/Tom Cruise movie "The Minority Report" is based on a short story by Dick.

So, yeah, I just wanted to say that.

The story is available in three books:

"The Minority Report" which was recently released is just a shameless cash in. I actually saw this thing earlier today at a book store, the story is really only around 40 pages long, but this book uses odd packaging to create a 90 page "book" which they sell at full price.

For a couple dollars more you can get the original compilation this story came in: "The Collected Stories of Phillip K Dick"

There's also another recently released short story collection which contains the minority report (I forgot its name)

Anyway, either of the compilations would be better.

I still don't know whether to be excited by this or not. I think it's got the potential to be great, but I don't know... I'm not sure if Spielberg can do dark and paranoid like that properly, and Tom Cruise bothers me a bit. I know he can act well, he did a great job in Magnolia, but I wonder will he try and do a job like that or will he just do the standard Hollywood thriller job. Still, I'll be going to see it when it comes out, so I'll no doubt find out then...

Well, I believe he tested the waters a bit with A.I. for that. I haven't seen A.I. though and the comments I've heard about it go for and against it, but it wasn't the kind of family fodder that Spielburg usually comes out with. Granted he wasn't doing this one solo.

And Cruise did a great job in A Vanilla Sky, which was pretty feckin' paranoid :)
