Just out of curiousity, what styles are people in here? A rather vague question I know... by style I mean are you more traditional with poet shirts et al, or industrial with studs and bondage gear, or do you make your own?
Me personally, I go for a more industrial look. Chains, bondage gear, spikes, combat boots, things of that sort. Though occasionally I dress more traditional, with a black dress shirt, celtic crosses etc.

I don't engage in style. It's too expensive, and for me, a waste of effort. But if I were to dress exactly the way I wanted it'd be very dark and reserved. Not necessarily black... actually no or very little black at all... greys and dark, almost black, browns. Maybe some very flat blacks. Very Victorian. Some white, but not much. Long, flowing coats (I'd have to move up north for that! ). That would be it, but I can only dream...

Well, this is when my brief welcome wears out and I get burned at the stake or at least run out of town...

...my style is predominantly "New England private school prep." Typical outfit is:
*fitted, ribbed black or grey sweater,
*brown cargo pants or dark-smooth-denim carpenter jeans,
*ankle-high buckle-fasten boots with thick soles,
*and one of those single-breasted black wool coats (think peacoat only single-breasted).

I did the whole romantigothi thing for a couple years (cloak and renn-fair boots), then did the rivethead thing for a couple years, but it really wasn't me. Nowadays you're more likely to find me in a J. Crew store than a second-hand clothing shop or HotTopic.

*prepares for martyrdom, hoping that they'll look on his industrial/goth CD collection as a reason to at least make the death quick and painless. The fact that he was born a year to the day after Ian Curtis' suicide, and knows this fact, should help too*

*points and laughs at SS*

Just kidding... martyrdom and flamewars wasnt what I was going for, just a curiosity. I don't really have the cash to be buying $1000 worth of clothes to show that I am "gother than thou"... It's rather pathetic when you think about it, if you have to but that much clothing to feel gothic. (this being typed as i'm getting ready to go to a club when everyone trys to out goth each other... oh the irony *hand to forehead*)

(edited because my spelling is horrible tonight)

oh my god. be ready to be flamed!!! here goes the whole "gother-than-thou" thing about shopping at hot topic. personally, i have bought band shirts and some buttons (my favorite being "HI, I DON'T CARE, THANKS") and accessories from there, although i do find their selection of chain link thongs quite umm interesting. thrift stores here bought me a couple of shirts, but not too much.

personally my style is the MIAGOTH. lol. no i'm romanti/industrial/mopey, but perkygoth in school.
-the classic watered down spike bracelet because i need help covering my wrists.
-black clothes, ranging from perkygoth things such as the words "gemini" in silver and pink rhinestones to spandex shirts with frills on the chest to this absolutely gorgeous and my favorite black shirt with red stitching and red designs all across the front.
-HEMP! hemp has been a fad over here, and once again i am caught in the middle even though i started it before the fad.
-black jeans, black cloth pants, or bluejeans.
-dark makeup around the eyes, like liner and shadow mostly.
my hair keeps changing so...

hemp for those of you who don't know is a strong tan string made from the marijuana plant. it is legal and i have heard if you roll up a shit load you can smoke so much as one puff that you would get off a weak joint off it.

My look is pretty low key. Lynch-Caberet you could say. Leather blazer, black tie, black shirt, black dress pants, black leather shoes.

my look is HOME MADE!

long, flowy and yet curve-baring and sexy.

I love corsets, and velvet dusters most of all. I'm in the process of making a duster, actually. I made a skirt with a wicked slit up the side that's held together by ribbons at the sides, so it's actually a sort of long-panelled loin cloth :b . I wear either chunky boots or mary janes, and usually have my hair up with lots of extention air to poof it out in pigtails. I'm making a long black and burg fall right now that I can clip to my head. I made a 5 layer tulle and satin skirt last Christmas.

I love film noir, and want to get some satin slip dresses and be able to sculpt my hair ala Veronica Lake.

fishnets are mandatory. But first and foremost, dress casualy for every day. looking club worthy day in day out is retarded.

Don't worry, that was a bit sarcastic. I never was a big fan of HotTopic, though I did pick up a fishnet shirt there once. But most ubers, though they hate HotTopic with a passion, would still rather see someone in there then buying something nicely-made, comfortable, attractive, and black from The Gap. It's a fact. A dumb fact, but a fact nonetheless.

Anyway, I kinda like the preppie look (when done right), even if I do adore VNV, SoM, and FLA.

I buy my black wherever I find it, as long as it's good quality and not ultra expensive if I can help it. I'm ultra fussy about clothing, and very tactile as well... the fabrics have to feel good and soft.

Generally I've found that Hot Topic stuff already *looks* like shit quality from afar which really doesn't entice me to look closer, when I do it's overpriced and bad quality more often than not, so I'll pass.

If the Gap offers me something nice in black with good quality and a reasonable price, I'll buy it. I'm not fussy about brandnames anyway, labels in the necks of outfits get cut out anyway as they drive me absolutely insane.

It's also much nicer to freak out the norms at the Gap by shopping there than wander around with a bunch of 13 year-old wannabes in Snot Topic :P

Back in the late '80s Cynthia Heimel, a New York humorist, was complaining how black clothing was catching on with the mainstream. Her friend was like "They're all wearing black but ... it's the wrong kind of black. Like Ann Taylor in black." Her solution, everyone cool needed to find a new color, a secret black. Then after the mainstream copycat cannibalizes that, they could switch back to their beloved black wardrobe.

Hmmm... :|

I don't really belong to any real "style" either but I dress often in a black suit with white shirt and a black tie.
When I am not wearing that (suit does not allways suit ;) I prefer my "BDU" pants, an A.C.A.B hoody and my black militaryboots.

I prefer well-dressed before wearing alot of spikes / metal shirts etc, but I own such stuff too. I wear it mostly when at home or around the neighbourhood.

But then again, I am just a "fücking black metalist", as someone (no names mentioned) said in a completly different thread on a completly different board. :b

Hmm, my current look?
Blakc t-shirts usually with skulls on them.
Black cargo pants that are pretty baggy but don't fall off my ass.
Black steel-toe boots.
Necklaces: Skeleton holding a marble, hammer, skull with spikes all over, a spider.
Rings: Dragon, Skull with crossing axes, a castle.
Bracelets: Chain i found in the garage wrapped around my wrist four times, many black beaded bracelets i made myself, a skull bead bracelet i made myself.
Black eyeliner, black eyeshadow, dark purple lipstick, black or dark (blood) red nail polish.

But i'm currently asking my mom to make me a nice black robe/coat type thing and i'm gonna watch and learn from her how to sew. So, i pretty much would prefer to wear homemade robe/coat types than my usual black, store-bought t-shirts. And i'd like to upgrade my jewelry and bracelets. And, as i've said before, i hope to have tattoos and piercings.

'Til then.. *Current look is pretty simple*..

Take care & G'Nite,
~Luke

I was sticking to the topic dear.

As for yelling me off the board: All people should do what they are best on, so I suppose you'll get to work soon :b

No seriously. Think whatever you want to think... I think you are cute!

*huge loads of none-existant compassion* =:)
