Floridians Denied The Right To Vote!
Governor Rick Scott has come up with a new mandate in Florida. It was what we are calling Voter Disenfranchisement. He is going through records and 'targeting' all non-citizens so they cannot vote during the presidential election. The fucked up thing is that this is so riddled with errors and is so uncouth that the majority of those being told they are non-citizens and cannot vote actually are citizens- and wouldn't you know it they are minorities, democrats and independents. Quote: According to data from the Miami-Dade County Supervisor of Elections obtained by ThinkProgress:
- 1638 people in Miami-Dade County were flagged by the state as “non-citizens” and sent letters informing them that they were ineligible to vote.
- Of that group, 359 people have subsquently provided the county with proof of citizenship.
- Another 26 people were identified as U.S. citizens directly by the county.
- The bulk of the remaining 1200 people have simply not responded yet to a letter sent to them by the Supervisor of Elections.
So at least 20 percent (and very likely more) of government-identified “non-citizens” in Miami-Dade county are actually citizens. And shockingly, the majority of them are Hispanic, Democrats and independent-minded. This is really scary to me. Sure, people only have to show proof that they are citizens but, it's likely many won't bother. I'd watch out in case any 'leaders' in your own states within the USA try to do this to you. You're opinions on this? References: (Link to quoted article)Another article Article + VideoVideo

I don't like the thought of non-citizens voting in our elections, but I like even less the fact that what appears to be the governor's "Enemies List" has a 20 percent (and possibly higher) error rate.
And, as Project Vote pointed out in their letter to the Secretary of State, the way your governor is going about all this is in violation of section 8 of the National Voter Registration Act of 1993. So my opinion is that the governor has to stop what he's doing.
I'm glad I don't live in Florida.

-- Nephele I agree. I don't want non-citizens to have the right to vote, but at the same time this is notthe way to go about it. The first video I posted says a lot on the issue, comparing it to what happened in 2000 when Governor Bush (Pres. Bush's brother) did this exact same thing, except under the guise of purging felons. Noe, I am an Independent Voter but I am very unlikely to be on his list. Still, this type of thing shouldn't happen at all and it upsets me greatly. It also upsets me that so many (in Florida and other states) are not taking this very seriously.

Re: Floridians Denied The Right To Vote!
Well according to this article the Department of Justice sent Scott a letter telling him to end this voter purge because it is illegal and rick Scott is choosing to ignore the demand and is still purging voters from the registry. Also according to the article Colorado and New Mexico are purging voters as well. Quote: On Friday, a lawyer with the Florida State Association of Supervisors of Elections issued a memo suggesting that all 67 counties stop the purge until the concerns raised by the Justice Department are addressed by the state or a court order. The association is a trade group for county election officials.
State election officials in Colorado and New Mexico, states with significant Latino populations, have also launched efforts to identify and purge suspected non-citizens from voter rolls. Justice Department officials declined to comment Friday on those efforts. This is ridiculous. I can't believe my fellow Floridians voted him to be our Governor. You get what you vote for, and screw those who knew better than to vote for such a jackass. I hope this ends and citizens can vote and not be purged from the polls, causing controversy for the election. I'd hate a repeat of Gore and Bush.
