Short hair for the very afraid?
I've had long hair all my life. Since it grew past my shoulders as a kid, it hasn't been cut above there... EVER. I love having hair to brush and tie up and curl and straighten and have fun with... But I've always wanted to try short hair. I've got a roundish face, wider around the eyes (makes wearing glasses awfully annoying). But what if I don't like it? What if I miss hair to brush? What if extensions look funny and well... Fake? There are equal pros and cons and I figure I should try when I'm young so as I have years to grow it... But I'm VERY indecisive. I was thinking of getting an undercut, and when that gets to a decent length cutting the rest of my hair to match it? So confused...

Re: Short hair for the very afraid?
I just did it. Went to the hairdresser (an expensive one, but he knew exactly what suited me) cut my hair, was happy with it for a year and then let it grow out again. If oyu never try, you will never know, if you go to a hairdresser anyway any time in the future, then just ask them what they think. if you don't have the face or hair for it at all, then they will tell you. I didn't miss my hair to brush at first, but after a while of having short hair I decided that I look better with longer hair (quite a round face myself), let it grow and then gave in to that spontanious idea of colouring it turquise and pink... In my opinion, go for all or noghint and if you regret it you know for the future what haircut not to get. You can blame me if you're unhappy afterwards, I can take it

Re: Short hair for the very afraid?
Aren't there apps in which you can try how different hairstyles and colours look on you, based on a passport photo you enter? Maybe some fancier salons even have them on hand.
But if you decide to try it, go to a good hairdresser. It's a big transition, and you want someone that really has a good eye for the best style for you to make it. You'll be so disappointed if you cut your hair and it doesn't look good because of a wrong style.

I've had short hair for decades; I decided to grow it out several years ago, and got it down past my shoulders. It was a bother to take care of, and I really missed my short hair, so I got it cut short again. I don't intend to ever grow it out again. my short hair

Re: Short hair for the very afraid?
I cut my hair in increments, starting with a bob. If you have a round face like me you probably want to avoid anything that resembles a blunt bowl cut, though.
It seems like you really like your long hair. That's something to consider. How easy is it to work with? Is it thick or does it look stringy? Fine hair is often better short. Short hair (with the right cut) is often a lot easier to manage and it can feel wonderful. However, growing it out again really can be a pain with awkward in between stages. This is something to talk to your hair stylist about.

I think you should go for it, its always fun to try something new but wait a while and ponder the idea just to make sure thats what you really want to do. I would browse the internet to see what short hairstyles fiu you, or you could cut a few inches off and see how you like it, if you do then you can cut off a little more and if you dont then you can let it grow out again

As a dude who had long hair for a long time, short hair is a pain in the arse. There's not much you can do with it really. I guess it depends how short you get it.

Re: Short hair for the very afraid?
Personally, I think short hair on ladies looks good in most cases. I appreciate your worry, though. It would take a long time to grow it back.
That it would grow back in time, though, means that you could try it and then just wait. Easier said than done though.

Re: Short hair for the very afraid?
I used to always keep my hair very long (i.e. down to almost my fanny). However, over time my hair has been thinning out and coming out, so I felt cutting it short would help make it look nicer and possibly leave more of it well...on my head And even if I hated it, I am lucky enough that my hair grows much faster than average (and since I always grow my hair so long, I can donate it! I've done that about five times now). I actually really love my hair short (the shortest I have it cut is around my earlobes). I don't recommend doing it yourself (I tried that last time and made a hot mess of things). If you go to a good stylist, it will be more expensive, but they should easily be able to determine what style would be good for your facial structure. If you're nervous about cutting it too short, I say go with something at or a little above your shoulders to try it out. This way if you hate it, you still have length and it'll grow longer. If you love it, you can either keep it like that or go a little shorter even.

Re: Short hair for the very afraid?
Thanks everybody, what an unfortunate time for me to lose all access to internet and not be able to reply sooner... Definitely going to cut it off. It's getting thin and I rip bits out as a nervous habit, it'll be harder to do if it's short And shorter hair would be so much easier to dye... it cost my $110AUD just to dye it an even burgundy at a hair dresser due to my mother's patchy dye jobs in the past (which took 2 packets of storebought dye). And besides... you have to do something with your hair that looks utterly horrible and is hard to reverse in your teenage years... it's just the rules

Have you ever thought of buying a short haired wig and trying that? Then if you hate it you just take the wig off and you don't have to wait years to get your long hair back Fancy dress shops usually hire wigs, so you wouldn't even have to buy one, just hire it. -- Tue Apr 10, 2012 8:11 pm -- LegendGirl wrote: I've had short hair for decades; I decided to grow it out several years ago, and got it down past my shoulders. I chopped it back to an inch long when I got rid of the black hair dye a couple of years ago and it just brushes my shoulders now. I agree with LG that it's a total pain and as I have very fine hair that needs washing everyday (or else I look like I've been dunked in a vat of oil) how I'll manage when it gets longer I have no idea

My hair is getting pretty messed up anyway, and I'm going to have to shop it off soon :/

I just entered the land of bifocals a couple of weeks ago, and I made sure I got black, gothy-looking frames. They're actually very cute with my short hair, which is spiky/messy and dyed dark brown, which is as close as I can come to black.
