Today was an episode of what I like to call, "Cultural Misunderstandings." This girl added me to Facebook, saying she had a few classes with me in college. We get to talking, and she kinda liked me. Problem is, she's Muslim and her father is pretty strict. She asked me what I believed in, and I told her that "There may be a god, but I don't pay homage to him." Anyways, we talk and talk some more, and we both log off for a while.

About 2 hours later, I get a message from her father (using his daughter's FB account) telling me to stay away. Buddy could have just told me once, I would have complied.... but noooo he had the audacity to say he'd poison my coffee if me and his daughter ever went out for coffee together. I saved the conversation in case I ever need it later.

I'll let shit slide, but maaaan, some people need to recognize that in some cultures if you start running your mouth you're going to be met with a VARIETY of responses. He only gets a pass from me because I can understand there's cultural differences and I have no idea what resources this dude has.

The daughter tried to calm the situation by saying that they were "empty" threats but then she said that her father has only hurt one of her ex-boyfriends. I didn't know what to believe, so I left that situation.

Yow...That is just wacko... Leaving the situation was a good idea.

So... I take it his Islam is not the Islam of The Artist Formerly Known as Cat Stevens?

I agree with batty. I think the father's just crazy. Nothing to do with religion/culture. Good thing you left the situation though.

Thanks Milk for the congratulations. :) I'm happy about that too. I just have to get through a spinal tap tomorrow. Oh, and I did one of my midterms today (still have one more to do) and did better than I did on the last test, so that's good. :)

Orlok, that girl might be fun to have a coffee with - that you made yourself ;) - but her daddy sure is no in-law-material. Cultural differences is all good and well, but he should learn that in Canada (US?) and almost every other place on this globe there are way more sophisticated solutions to the 'problem' of his daughter having a coffee with someone he might not want as a son-in-law at first sight. Good call in leaving the situation.

PS I hope you and your family are okay? After losing your dog, I mean, not this episode described above.

My thought of today: having the flu sucks.

Cultural differences is not an excuse to make terroristic threats [in and of itself a crime in most places], or to beat someone up simply because you dislike them [or dislike them dating your daughter]. If he beat up one of her exboyfriends simply because he thought she shouldn't be dating, he needs to be locked up for it.

My mother is broken up about losing the family dog, but otherwise, we're O.K.

She's already hurt pretty bad, which is why I didn't tell her about the recent exchange with this girl's father and I. If it got worse, then yeah I would totally tell her.

However, since the situation seems to be averted, I see no reason to speak on this.

I have been feeling pretty awful these days... Everyday this week, I've had a stomach ache... I usually am prone to frequent stomach aches but not this often. The stomach aches are hard to explain... I guess I could say that it is bad pain in my lower stomach (or intestinal area). I've always excused it as a sensitive stomach but this is becoming a bit much. I'm wondering if there is something wrong with me... My mother and I are assuming some form of colitis or maybe even crohn's disease... Guess I need to go to the GI...Better ask my best friend about all that stuff... *sigh*...everyday I feel like I'm getting weaker. I don't know how much more of this I can take...

Dragonwings: it's good to hear that the Spinal-tap went well, and was relatively painless.

Alucard: Hopefully you can get it taken care of quickly.

Orlok, I am so sorry about the poor doggie (((hugs)))
Dragonwings, that's a relief that the spinal tap was not a big deal after all.
Alucard, I hope you can find out very soon what's causing this and get the right treatment. :(
