I really hate Cradle of Filth. I remember coming across pictures of Dani Filth getting the crap beat out of him by security on his last birthday. It made me laugh but I was sad that I couldn't have witnessed it.

I hate the fact that people call screaming at the top your lungs singing/ talent

I agree with the long band names....

The abbreviation for a band's name should not look like a whole sentence unto itself.

Cradle of Filth: they were alright up until the Vempire EP, before they became rock stars. Their early demos were half-decent death metal, and Principle of Evil Made Flesh was good fun black/horror metal in the vein of Mercyful Fate/King Diamond/Death SS.
Everything after Vempire was atrocious though...... I can't stand Sara Jezebelo's "spoken whore voice"..... it's just....... ugh!!!! :x

Agreed upon all the shitty metalcore, nu-metal, emocore, etc.
I like a lot of black metal, death metal, and industrial that uses "screamy" vocals, but the huge difference is that I prefer my screams to be deep, dark, inhuman demonic screams, full of processed effects from the depths of the abyss!!!
When it's just some short-haired geek in baggy shorts and a skater hoodie, screaming like an angry little kid over some mediocre unthreatening rock music, I just gotta laugh

^This. I'm like that with death metal as well; I hate any "high-pitched" growling, it sounds stupid. xD I love deep, "demon-possessed" type voices as you mentioned.

I'm a Cradle of Filth hater too.
I went to a concert before, the main draw for me being Sepultura (original line-up).
Sepultura pulled out at the last minute and were replaced by COF, Dani tried to make fun of Sepultura for pulling out, but I think literally every person in the place hated COF, so it didn't go down too well ;)

Never could stand them, now they seem to be all that's on the "rock" radio station here. :/

I know I'm beating a dead horse by saying this, but.... CRADLE OF FILTH. The crappy faux hardcore lyrics about falling in love with a witch or a zombie or some shit, the fat bitch reading emo poetry she printed of deviantART during the breakdowns, Dani's dying animal singing an little-boy-with-no-testicles screaming, and the overall air of TRYING TOO HARD that radiates off EVERY DAMN SONG. The whole mess makes me want to rip out my ear drums with a rusty meat hook.

Its all just vomit-inducingly fake and forced. I just can't fucking stand the special brand of posercore peddled by Dani Failth!

CRAAAAAAAAAAWWWWWLIIIIIIING IIIIIIIIIIN MY EEEEEEEARS THIS NOIIIIISE IT WIIIILL NOOOOOOOOT STOOOOOOOOOOP!!!! PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAASEEE JUST MAAAAAAKE IT EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEND!!!! THIIIIIIIS SHIIIIIIIIIIT IS WOOOOOOOOOOORSE THAN POP.

I think Voltaire's lyrics are good, but the music is not that great...

Standing ovation! I couldn't have explained better if I tried! I completely concur about what you said about the art of music. I'm disgusted with the people who insist that Lady Gaga is magnificent. Yes, she tries to put meaning in her songs, but the fact of the matter is, she doesn't do it well at all. I still fail to see the point in the hollow district of rap. They say that some rappers rap about deep things, when they're really only complaining about everyday hassles. If you want meaning, try to sit still for an hour or so and reflect upon the hypocrisy and dangers of society. Within Temptations does that beatifully. These people just don't know art, the pitiful creatures. But I hope that there are many on this site that can recognize true beatuy.

*blushes* My dear lady, you are too kind.

Regarding...

Lady Gaga - I can enjoy some of her songs (yes, I actually admitted to that) as what they are: totally mindless, thoroughly meaningless pop, that's all. It's not art at all, just consumer noise that ranges from crass to amusing. I enjoy "Just Dance", for example, on the same level that I would enjoy, say, an episode of Star Trek: Voyager, Plan 9 from Outer Space, an extremely silly action flick with no actual plot or a Big Mac: it's fun for a minute, but there's no depth or meaning to it whatsoever. No nutritional value can be gained from her works, it's just bubblegum for the brain. Chew, blow a few bubbles, discard when finished. The rest of her songs either bore me to tears or rot my poor brain like sulfuric acid.

Rap "Music" - I remember an old magazine I read as a child (specifically, this was 1991, after MC Hammer had just released "Too Legit to Quit"; don't ask me how I remember that) described rap music as people speaking in rhyme about one of two subjects:
  • how awesome they are;
  • how stupid they think everyone else is.

Hot damn, was that ever accurate! Aside from some of the "urban warzone life" songs like Coolio's "Gangsta's Paradise" (when the Hell did it become popular to misspell the word "gangster"??) or the mournful "Tha Crossroads" (again with the misspelling of easy-to-spell words; did they have to misspell the word "the" to make the song title look appropriately thuggish?), most rap music I've heard is about those two topics and nothing else.

Embarrassing Admission #2: I actually like the original version of Katy Perry's song "E.T.". (Can't stand the rest of her songs; I just like that one, for whatever reason.) I absolutely hate the new version with rapper Kanye West. (Sure, I've thought Kanye was a drooling idiot ever since this incident, but that's beside the point.) Her song was this nice little tune where she praises her paramour, describing his love as cosmic and otherworldly; in a silly, sci fi way, it was somewhat romantic. His "contribution" to the song (I use that term the same way I would describe what I find in my cat's litterbox) described himself, using lyrics as perverted as he could in a pop song meant for a general audience. Her lyrics were directed outward, toward her lover; his were directed inward. For me, it definitely illustrated the point I made above: if they're not talking about life on the "mean streets" or how stupid their opposite-coast rivals are, rappers are usually rapping about their incredibly high opinions of themselves.

When they try to rap about something else, it's usually inane drivel without any meaning that cannot possibly be enjoyed on any level by any rational, thinking person. For example, the song "1st of tha Month" is literally about a street celebration being held on the day welfare checks are paid out. (Seriously! Check out the Wikipedia article!) To say nothing of the black hole of meaninglessness that is the song "Lip Gloss"... To misquote the Bard, I think of the average rap song as "a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing."

Within Temptation - This band I like. I dig the symphonic sound, the vocalist's voice is choral and ethereal, and the lyrics actually mean something. Even better: the videos actually try to express that meaning visually! (Can't tell you how many times I've seen music videos that seemed to be in an entirely different universe from the song they feature.) It's not just this band, either; I love the entire genre. Nightwish? Epica? Sirenia? Bring it on!

Epica, Within Temptation and E.T FTW! We have a lot in common...

Actually the first time I heard Evanescence was when I was living in Brazil, and they happened to be on my homestay brother's favorite rock radio station. I couldn't help but laugh because I actually thought Lacuna Coil had finally decided to cash in and have Cristina guest on a Linkin Park song

Never was a Lacuna Coil fan either. I remember reading all these reviews and hearing them on compilations when they first came out and they just sounded like normal, boring alternative rock. Nothing "goth" nor "metal" about them.....

Ah, I've just remembered Fear Cult... I totally forgot about them but I've just stumbled upon their version of Sexbeat again and oh God, do I feel like I could tear off their heads for butchering up that faboulous song! But all other songs I've hard by them were really crappy, clichéd and their singer is like a bad version of a Rozz Williams-wannabe. Oh, God, oh God... :x

I know this post I'm replying to is old, but I gotta pie up and nay-say that I actually really liked Fear Cult; yes, they're cheesy, but so are John Waters' early films, and I love those, too. I agree that their version of "Sexbeat" wasn't as good as the original, but I never got the impression that this was a band that took themselves too seriously. Their original version of "Drop Dead (On the Dancefloor)" (when Matt Riser was still essentially treating Fear Cult as a solo project) was better, I think the version on the 2003 album was over-produced to a ridiculous extent.

As to my own answers to the question:

I really wouldn't say I hate them, but I never really understood the appeal of Joy Division and Depeche Mode, and these are two bands that "everybody" in the Goth and other scenes I've been a part of seem to really like, if not love. I don't get it. At one time, I was actually kind of angry at the fact that I couldn't get into these two bands, and would sometimes claim that I hated them and accuse them of being untalented -- and then it occurred to me that New Order members are ex-Joy Division, and I like New Order, so clearly that old hypothesis had no standing.

I can't really think of anything I actively hate right now, music-wise, but I will chime in with all the reasons Katy Perry makes people here was to punch her in the face. I seriously stopped taking THE ADVOCATE seriously as a GBLT publication for putting her in a cover shoot; seriously ADVOCATE, that was a move so full of fail.

I've actually never heard anything shes done with COF. I first heard her, of course, when she sang for Therion. I was surprised when I heard she was with CoF.

Maybe this thread's a little old to resurrect, but speaking of CoF, the first time I heard one of their songs (Cthulu Dawn) I couldn't stop laughing.

Long thread- people seem to care passionately about what music's bad here.
