Basements and libraries are two places whose scents never seem to waver, and never fail to evoke feelings of comfort. When I'm lucky enough to wander into a library basement, I nearly cream myself. I remember sitting in the basement of the USF library for hours on end reading through microfilm archives of late 19th and early 20th century news articles on criminal cases for fun. It's gotta be a goth thing. I never thought anything of it before, but yes it must definitely be a goth thing. I've talked to people about basement smells before and they had different opinions ha ha. Libraries too have beautiful scents. If I could work in a library right now, I would definitely go for it!

I mentioned in another thread that I love the smell of museums, i guess those places have special meanings to us and their unique scent often encapsulates them.

You know your goth if... Red is your new color, because black is too stereotypical...

Re: You know you're goth if...
During a recent nursing excursion to funeral home, we were privileged to be able to enter the mortuary. Ahhhh! I love that clinical smell and the table and everything is clean and white (or stainless) and disinfected and the tools..... I couldn't believe that all the others couldn't get out of there quick enough so I didn't get much of a chance to soak in the environment Must be a goth thing then?

I agree. Basements and libraries indeed have beautiful smells. You know you're a Goth if... ...You never have to change your light bulbs. ...A classmate exclaims "Oh my god! You're wearing colour!" whilst you you are wearing your black velvet choker with red "Blood Droplet" Gothic beads. ...The ribbon on your black lace gloves gets sucked into the hand-held vacuum whilst you are cleaning. ...The only thing you want for Christmas are 19th century books and Gothic clothing. ...You don't have a Christmas tree, but rather your house (and you) appears as if it if Halloween year-round. ...You wear knee-high combat boots year-round... And yes, that includes the summer. ... You're always the "tallest" in your class.

You know you're goth if you dyed your hair so many times that it starts growing black at the roots.

You know you're goth if you think of the hearse as a "family car"

You know you're goth when you look like you're going a funeral in the 1890's.

Instead of: The ribbon on your black lace gloves gets sucked into the hand-held vacuum whilst you are cleaning. How about: The ribbon on your black lace gloves gets caught on your typewriter key...
Those damn ribbons. So beautiful, yet they always get in the way...

To this, I'll add ...You obsessively hunt for scents that smell like basements and libraries. (Curse you, bpal. You're my one weakness. )

Re: You know you're goth if...
...if you're apparently the only one who still wears opium oil and seeking opium incense -when did this scent get so hard to find? ...if you quibble on about the difference between "deathrock" and "gothic rock" or just generally object to using "deathrock" as a catch-all term for any goth music made before, or at least made by a band formed well before 1991. ...if you actually wonder if your newly-confirmed latex allergy means you have to deduct a Goth Point or two.
