Going back a bit, but I liked The Shroud's cover of Alice (originally by Sisters of Mercy). Completely changed the tone of the song, but well worth a listen.

You beat me to it :D... I loved the video Marilyn Manson did, it had me laughing my head off (though not literally of course ;) ).

ANYTHING covered by Laibach!!!! In fact, I think a solid 50% of their extensive catalogue is covers......

Classics are the Queen and Opus covers on their Opus Dei album.

Plus, their rendition of the Japanese, Russian, and American National Anthems on Volk were fairly creative and well done!!

But out of the three band who've covered that old song "In the Year 2525": Project Pitchfork, Laibach, or Fields of the Nephilim, I preferred the Nephs version by far! Actually, probably the best song on Mourning Sun!!

Von Thronstahl also did an interesting re-working of Warsaw/Joy Division's "Walked in Line", changing the title to "Dressed in Black Uniforms" and turning it into a doom-laden funeral march!

The old medieval folk song "Palastinalied" has been covered to death by various medieval darkwave, mittelalter, and folk metal bands, but the best version by far was the one by Qntal.

If we were to get into metal stuff, maybe Wall of Voodoo's "Mexican Radio" by Celtic Frost.

And finally to top it all off, is the gorgeous cover of Nico's "Abschied" by Sopor Aeternus..... the original was alright, even if it was a bit on the overly artsy side, but the extended cover just brings tears to my eyes!!!

Beat me to it -- and actually surprised how many pages deep I had to go before some-one made that mention.

Yes. Just... yes. Laibach makes everything better.

I'm also going to add:

* Siouxsie - "Wheel's On Fire" (which is actually a cover of a cover, going by the arrangement hers is based on) and "Dear Prudence"
* Danielle Dax - "Tomorrow Never Knows"
* Christian Death - "Panic In Detroit"
* Andi Sexgang - "Broken English" (actually, all of Faithfull Covers was pretty good, but most of it, due to the nature of Marianne Faithfull's career, is basically covers of covers)
* Claudia Brücken & Andrew Poppy - "Drive-In Saturday", "Broken English", and "Running Up That Hill" (possibly my favourite versions of the latter two)
* Erasure - "Solsbury Hill"
* Sandie Shaw - "Hand In Glove"
* Concrete Blonde - "Tomorrow Wendy"
* Fun Boy Three - "Our Lips Are Sealed"
* Love & Rockets - "Ball of Confusion"
* Klaus Nomi - "Lightning Strikes" (completely owns it over Lou Christie's original)
* Japan - "I Second That Emotion" and "Don't Rain On My Parade"
* Ippu-Do "Time of the Season"
* Lydia Lunch & Rowland S. Howard - "Some Velvet Morning"
* Lydia Lunch & Clint Ruin - "Don't Fear the Reaper"
* Pansy Division - "Big Bottom"
* Stiv Bators - "I Had Too Much to Dream (Last Night)"
* The Dead Boys - "Sonic Reducer" (this technically counts, as it was originally recorded with the first version of the band, Rocket From the Tombs, and then re-recorded when Stiv Bators came on for vocals and... I forget who else left, but they formed Pere Ubu, and the remaining members re-named themselves The Dead Boys)

....and I'm only listing the ones I think are just as good, if not better, than the originals.

I completely agree on Siouxsie's cover of 'Dear Prudence'. Her version pwns!

I don't, however, think that Queen can be improved upon.

Normally, I'd agree, but I don't think Laibach so much improved "One Vision" so much as re-interpreted it in their character. It definitely stands apart as its own; like Star Trek and The Next Generation, it's really unfair to rank one as better than the other as a whole.

Ikon's cover of Death In June's Fall Apart is very good IMO.

Laibach certainly did give it their own flavor. And not a bad one, at that.

KoRn - Another Brick In The Wall. (Originally sung by Pink Floyd.)

Not really a big fan of KoRn but this was just...wow...amazing...

Have to agree with people on "The Passenger." It was years before I ever knew that that was an Iggy Pop song.

Definitely the Sister's version of "Gimme Shelter." The original doesn't do much for me, but Andrew Eldritch's vocal on than one nails it for me.

I'd forgotten about Siouxie and the Banshees' cover of "Dear Prudence." I really like that one alot too.

This one isn't really "goth," but related: I really dig Book of Love's cover of David Bowie's "Sound and Vision."
