Re: Sherlock Holmes 2: A Game of Shadows
I've seen a couple of previews for this, and it looks good. Plus, I'm looking forward to seeing Noomi Rapace on screen again!

Re: Sherlock Holmes 2: A Game of Shadows
I am so looking forward to this sequel, too!
Contrary to what some might think regarding this portrayal of Holmes as not being "true to the novels," I find this Holmes to be very true to the original stories by Doyle as far as Holmes being a quite physical man of action. Doyle, in a later story that revived Holmes after the fateful encounter with Moriarty at Reichenbach Falls ("The Adventure of the Empty House" 1903), explained that Holmes was an expert in a martial arts form called "Baritsu." Also, in other stories, Doyle had established that Holmes was an expert boxer and prize-fighter ("The Adventure of the Gloria Scott" (1883), "The Sign of the Four" (1890), and "The Adventure of the Solitary Cyclist" (1903).
Watson, too, was more of a man of action in the original stories (just as Jude Law portrays him in these new movies). The old Basil Rathbone movies that depicted Watson as a bumbling fool (that seems to be stuck in the public consciousness now) did a great injustice to Doyle's original character.

The first movie was awesome, therefore this one will be awesome. End of story.
There is no words to express how much ass the first "Sherlock Holmes" movie kicked.

What I love about it is that people think it's a fake martial art.... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bartitsu Nephele wrote: Watson, too, was more of a man of action in the original stories (just as Jude Law portrays him in these new movies). People were all "oh he's just a doctor blah blah blah" and I was all "yeah... an Army doctor" and they were all "blah blah Army blah blah where were they fighting then, France (lolololol)?" and I was alll "Afghanistan". Silence. 28 year old combat medics are far more impressive.

Re: Sherlock Holmes 2: A Game of Shadows
To tell you the truth, when I first saw that movie, I really didn't see it as a Sherlock Holmes movie. Instead, I saw a movie that combines the Batman mythos with the Indiana Jones series.
The way I saw it:
-Sherlock Holmes is a combination of Indiana Jones and Batman
-Watson is a combination of Robin and Short Round
-Inspector Lestrade is a combination of Comissioner Gordon and Marcus Brody
-Irene Adler is a combination of Catwoman and Marion Ravenwood
-Blackwood is a combination of the archetypical Batman villain and the archetypical Indiana Jones villain

I didn't have high hopes for the first one, and I ended up being very good. I am exited to see this one, I love Robert Downey Jr.

Re: Sherlock Holmes 2: A Game of Shadows
Another thing that Sherlock Holmes was is a one-man CSI team.
Holmes is Sara, Grissom, Cat, Warrick, Nick, Greg, Horatio and Calleigh, all rolled into one.
He did the same stuff they did, but with 19th century technology.

I don't see your point. The cast of a modern TV series combined approximate the archtypical Master Detective charcter. Where is the problem here?

My point is that the thing Holmes does and how he does them remind me of a CSI agent. Besides, he has Grissom's fascination for bugs and classical music, Sara's poor personal skills, Nick's sarcastic humor, Calleigh's cheeky personality and Horatio's passionate drive to see criminals brought to justice. But maybe it's just me.

Re: Sherlock Holmes 2: A Game of Shadows
Probably. Given that Holmes appeared first in 1887 and CSI <cityname> in 2000 I'd say you have it exactly backwards.

Re: Sherlock Holmes 2: A Game of Shadows
I am so stoked about this...just found out about it the other day when I was looking up some random RDJ stuff. I love his acting, and I am so happy for him to come out of that slump he got himself into back in the 80s-90s. He is an awesome actor...one of my favorite. Sherlock Holms 2, The Avengers, and Iron Man 3...oh yes!!!

Re: Sherlock Holmes 2: A Game of Shadows
Holmes inspired every other cool detective that came after him. I was actually going to draw the comparison between he and Batman(what with all of the super-seekrit martial arts stuff and eye for infinite detail), but it's been done.
I actually liked the first Holmes movie. Despite my misgivings, RDJ pulled the character off well. I am hoping this next one is equally amusing.

Re: Sherlock Holmes 2: A Game of Shadows
Still, I think the Indiana Jones/Batman combination factor is stronger.
As I said before, I saw Movie Holmes as a fusion of Batman and Indiana Jones, Movie Watson as a fusion of Robin (any Robin) and Short Round, Movie Lestrade as a fusion of Commissioner Gordon and Marcus Brody, Movie Irene Adler as a fusion of Catwoman and Marion Ravenwood and Lord Backwood as a fusion of all the villains Indy ever faced with Batman's Rogue Gallery.
And I KNOW that the literary version of these characters predate both Indiana Jones and Batman, but I'm talking about the MOVIE versions here.
The movie certainly combined the childhood excitement that I felt when I watched the original Indiana Jones trilogy for the first time with the geeky joy I get whenever I read a good Batman comic.
That's why I'm stoked for the sequel.
