What do you guys think about the Beach Boys?
I've loved them since I was 10. They are really great!

They're a bit sugary-sweet for me to listen to often, for me, but they were a good band, came up with great, catchy melodies. Random facts : The Beatles wrote Back in the U.S.S.R. as a parody of, and homage to, The Beach Boys (and Chuck Berry). Their song Never Learn Not To Love was actually written by Charles Manson.

THAT is an eye opener. Incredible.

Charles Manson has worked with a few music artists such as Guns N Roses. : P EDIT: They recorded one of his songs. SOURCE: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Manson#Recordings

I watched a documentary that happened to talk a little about them. Brian Wilson makes me sad.
Other than that, I don't really care too much about them.

Re: What do you guys think about the Beach Boys?
The rivalry between those who loved the Beatles vs the Beach Boys was pretty intense in the 60's. The BB's music was looked down on by many as surf music, all songs sounding just like the other. The Beatles on the other hand *sighs* were perfection. (Guess which side of the debate I was on?) I don't like the harmony the Beach Boys are so famous for, and the story of Dennis Wilson and his so called friendship with Charles Manson makes for interesting reading. The innocent flower power of the sixties was a great dream while it lasted. Brian Wilson went through hell it seems but has come through alive and kicking. http://www.brianwilson.com/index.html

Makes me remember the alt. rock V grunge rivalries in my school

Re: What do you guys think about the Beach Boys?
First I would like to say that I like both the Beatles AND The Beach Boys
ok, as for The Beach Boys, I like them. I don't LOVE their stuff but I enjoy their stuff (besides Kokomo). I saw them a few years back at a local fair, still great as ever.
My brother saw them when John Stamos was playing for 'em, he said he was pretty good.

To Black Milk: I don't think that the musicians themselves were ever rivals.........but their fans were the ones who chose sides quite forcefully. It was probably just a publicity gimmick, but the fans took it to heart at times. They were truly rivals in the top 40, and there were many who saw the success of the British invasion as almost a bad thing.

Re: What do you guys think about the Beach Boys?
The Beach Boys were a fantastic band. The depth of talent they had to draw on was superb and they released some of the most life affirming records I've ever heard in rock and roll. Some of the records on Pet Sounds and smile were pure genius. The harmonies at the end of God Only Knows have never been bettered in popular music in my opinion despite the fact that they were very simple.
Dennis Wilson released some fantastic solo recordings in the seventies too before his lifestyle shattered his spirit and his voice.

Re: What do you guys think about the Beach Boys?
Brian Wilson had genius, and Pet Sounds is one of the really enduring classics, maybe the first ever 'prog' rock album if you discount Revolver by the Beatles, which it was actually made in answer to.
And it, in turn, strongly affected Sargent Pepper.
