That's a great blog, and I'll be buying Worldwide Gothic, too, when it comes out. It'll be interesting to see how this book compares with Gavin Baddeley's Goth Chic: A Connoisseur's Guide to Dark Culture.

Thanks for the headsup!

EDIT: Interesting name of the author: Natasha Scharf. While "scharf" literally means "sharp" in German, it also means "hot; sexy" in German.

You're welcome! And, I also have Goth Chic...it's a good book! If this one's half as good that would be saying something! That's too funny about the name...we can never have enough sharp, sexy writers!

Yes, if I'm remembering correctly, I don't think Gavin Baddeley's book was that strong on goth worldwide -- I'm pretty sure he concentrated mostly on the origins of goth in the U.K. and U.S.? It'll be interesting to read how goth subculture took root worldwide, as this new book promises to deliver.

Goth gets little indepth coverage as far as books go, imo. In particular, here in the US, as I know Mick Mercer has done his fair share...that stuff tends to be limited to the UK (unless you're up for importing). That said, I can't wait to see how this will turn out.

Bump.

So, this is, uh...well, out. Has anyone gotten their mittens on it yet? I can't seem to find anything about it with ol' Amazon (which seems to have "sold out"), and my local Borders definitely doesn't look like it's getting it any time soon (as it doesn't show at all on their site).

Any reviews?

Hey, some copies have popped up on Amazon finally. Doesn't look like this book is going to get sold in big bookstores like Borders, at least not any time soon.

Here's a link!

Post Re: Worldwide Gothic & The Sky's Gone Out
I finally received the book in the mail the morning, and just managed to finish reading it.

All I can say is that I really like it. Read below for the review. I've put spoiler on it in case for some reason you don't want the book a bit ruined.

It does an excellent job providing a pretty expansive picture of the goth scene starting from its roots to where it (might be) at today. It covers a lot of ground in a quick manner, managing to touch on scenes in parts of the world that I would never have thought to even consider. I mean, would you ever have thought about what scenes were going on in the likes of Singapore and Taiwan?

There are things that may perhaps be a bit out there for some. Like, I've never been well acquainted with the "gothic metal" genre (as I generally don't touch metal often), and she really talks a lot about gothic metal and its relation to the scene. Unfortunate part about that (in my own perspective) is that it brings up associations such as Marilyn Manson and Nine Inch Nails and the sorts. That aside though, it allows her to delve into scenes such as those in the Middle East and such that are rather metal-oriented.

She also does a great job bringing attention to many darker indie acts that have started to surface (like O Children, the Horrors, and SCUM and stuff like that), as well as many recently developed genres. For example, witch house gets mentioned along with "Gucci Goth", which is more or less a kind of "critique" on the gothic music and fashion that goes in line with the witch house genre.

She rounds it all up with a quick synopsis of the development of goth from its hay days to what it is now. Oh, and there's plenty of cool pics. I'd probably recommend this to anybody just getting into the scene. As an overview, it does an awesome job. It mentions enough bands, DJs, and such to allow for further exploration on behalf of the reader.

Hopefully I do it some justice and don't make it sound horrible. :)
