 Looking for Tech Support
Got a virus? Need a hand with a program? Want advice? Let the guiding do gooder Goths give you a hand (if they feel like it)! A General Computer help thread.
I have a problem I'm running Windows 7 and everytime I log in my screen is black with only my mouse showing up on screen. It's difficult to get here and very frustrating. My Anti Virus said some blocked attacks were coming from [Device\harddiskvolume2\windows/system32\svchost.exe] Any advice?

I got a report from my Norton baout a bcakdoor virus. Let's hope this is it and that when it's gone my computer is back up to snuff.

 Re: Looking for Tech Support
It might be possible to run in 'safe mode' amd remove it from there, else there are bootable anti-virus products out there which won't execute the infected files on ypur hard disk. You could also try BSD or Linux stuff, but its not for everyone.

What is your OS ericja? You can try to use http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/ for unlocking the file needed to delete. Puck, Sorry I can't help you since SVChost is a Windows core process that many viruses share that name. @LS Linux is maybe a little hard for computer newbies but initiated users are able to install and use it without problems

My computer seems to have fixed itself somehow. I'm very exicted at having my desktop back. Hope you all have the best of luck

 Re: Looking for Tech Support
I have two browsers, internet explorer and firefox. In internet explorer I can watch videos (for example on youtube). In firefox, which I have been using only very recently, I cannot. It says that I have disabled Javascript or need to get an update. I have checked the javascript and it's not disabled. I also have updated what was indicated, without problems. And restarted firefox. But I still cannot watch videos. Was it someting I did wrong? Should I check other settings? If so, what or which, and how? Ps. this is my first post using firefox. This appears to have a language checker in the post a reply thing (magically appeared, I swear), so the next project will be to figure out how to get it to check my English... As all words that do not also exist in my native language are underlined in red now (so, basically all except "internet" and "in")

nacht, I use NoScript to block bad sites, if you do not have that plugin then I would be wary that its trying to get you to install malware. Being paranoid about security on the internet seems to be the default as there is a lot of bad stuff out there, even taking over legitimate websites!
Firefox with NoScript and AdBlock Plus plugins - the minimum configuration I am happy with for browsing. Internet exploder is just a massive malware target.

It was geared only toward IE users. Thankfully I had just (literally, the day before) downloaded Firefox. Needless to say, I've been wary about using IE ever since then.

My YouTube has stopped working! I've tried uninstalling Adobe Flash and then installing the latest version of Adobe Flash, but nothing works! Soooo frustrating! Advice, anyone? It's weird. I had a spell of that, following an update from Adobe. It lasted about a day. Suddenly, everything went completely back to normal, and it's been fine since.

Yes, that's exactly what happened with me! All this started right after updating Adobe. Ugh. Updates always make me nervous. -- Nephele

Apparently Windows 7 service pack #1 nukes restore points If you don't back up your install to other media then a failed update can't be rolled back. Oh, the update does seem to crash on some machines. Nice.

 Re: Looking for Tech Support
Anyone know anything about Audacity? Also connecting Turntables to computers. I'm trying to rip vinyl on to my laptop, but I can't figure out how to get Audacity to accept input from the turntable (which audacity came with), and I can't see my turntable on my laptop to begin with (solving the latter will probably fix the former).
