Post Re: "Good Hair"
Anyone have any hints for controlling frizz in straight hair? I've tried everything though I prefer to go as natural as possible. I even cut my hair short to make it manageable thinking with a style that flicks out the frizz wouldn't be so noticeable.... The style looks much better than the super heavy, thick and course hair to my waist but the frizz is still noticable (to me at least).

Any ideas????

Is your hair naturally curly or wavy before blowing it out?

OnyxSoul,
Thanks - my hair is just plain straight but is course (rather like horse mane - ick!) but the frizz is worse in wet weather. It's always been nasty - even before I started colouring it.

I've tried blow-drying, ceramic straightener, all manner of control-frizz products and un-scented massage oil (cold-pressed vegetable based). Lately I've been using Hair Goop and a natural based hair spritz (non-aerosol hair spray) to try to fluff/flip it out at the sides and back so the frizz isn't as noticeable but my hair is so heavy (even though I've had it thinned out) that it flops within a few hours.

Maybe I should just give up and love the frizz?

Have you tried washing & rinsing your hair with cold water? It doesn't have to be cold enough to give you gooseflesh, just cool enough that it doesn't steam.

Doesn't have to be cold, just cool water that doesn't steam. Although I will admit to sometimes lowering the temperature for extra shine. Sometimes it feels like ice running down my back. What doesn't kill me makes me more beautiful, right? :P

Tried the cold water, still frizzy bits stick out. Note, if it isn't steaming, it's too cold for me. I'm a bit of a frog!

I think I'll just try a style that just sticks out everywhere. That should disguise it.

My hairdresser usually tells me that when hair act funny it's because they are the first signal of general stress... hope it's not your case.
My hair is not completely straight, it has waves and in the past I used to have truble taming it... what works for me is conditioner and a cast iron straightner. Since my hair also have positions going the wrong way (not sure how to describe it) the hairdresser suggested me to dry it with a round hairbrush in the opposite way then what I want and then bring them back in the right position with a cast iron straightner. Drying hair while brushing it is really painful for the arm, but it pays back (at least for me) it also helps close hair scales and hair looks glossier.

Not sure it helps, my apologies if I got you wrong.

Thanks Calliope, I'll try that. And you're probably right about the stress. I feel like my life is just one long stress after the other.

Wolfy, Minnie, OnyxSoul and Calliope, you are ALL gorgeous! Loves you all!

I find conditioner only washing is working well for me. It's still a little limp and er - slick... but not knotty or frizzy like it was with shampoo, and it doesn't grease up again quite as fast. It's easier to detangle the long ends too. (CO washing might take a little time to get used to, but it's the quick easy option for me now.)

I'm a white chick so I don't know how it would go on 'black' hair, but it could be worth a try. I heard once that some people use heavy greasy products to make their hair straighter/silkier, then have to use harsh cleaners to strip the gunk off which makes it rough.

I think it's a pity that it's been racialised and there's "good hair" and "bad hair" to have. Strong hair with lots of volume would be cool in some ways.

Goodbye hairspray and comb!
