Post New Wave of Irish Immigration?
I heard on the news that Ireland is in a really bad way right now and that it is expected that many Irish are likely to leave Ireland to find work, etc...

Here is an article about it.

I am wondering what you all think about this, espeically the Irish among us.

Sorry if this is old news to everyone. I just heard about it.

So Arq & Milky are moving over here with us, then? :P

Sounds good, to me. I do wonder what could be done to make the economy in Ireland better, though.

Hm. It's not so much of a new surprise that loads of people from Ireland, as well as Scotland, immigrate to other countries like the U.S., Canada, New Zealand and Australia, and not solely because of large events like famines and socio-economic problems. It would seem that it's largely the younger generations that move from the countryside to the cities, shifting from the traditional agricultural economics to the post-WWII industrial and business world. The crofting traditions of the Scottish highlands is dwindling because of this economic shift, not only because of convenient opportunities in the cities but also because of agricultural changes (before WWII the Highlands mainly raised cattles and produced their own milk, but after WWII it was easier to raise sheep and buy milk from nearby towns).

Alas, Scotland isn't Ireland. :P

But I read and heard of accounts of similar migrations that occured in Ireland, from one of my professors who's of Irish descent, in which it seems that Ireland and Scotland are another example of a country where the older generation is weighing out the younger generation.

And correct me if I got any of that wrong. I would like to learn more about the large-scale and small-scale migrations of Ireland.

I blame the government, it was started by greedy unchecked banks, but it wouldn't have lasted so long or gotten so bad if not for the frankly baffling decisions of our incompetent "leaders".
Apparently lowering everyones wages while simultaneously raising the price of everything (except alcohol and cigarettes *rolls eyes*) does not encourage spending, stimulating the economy! Who knew?!

I've thought of leaving, I don't know that I ever will though, the idea of starting from scratch somewhere away from my family and friends is very daunting. I also have no qualifications to help me (college drop out).
Not to mention every other country seems filled with foreigners!

The only large-scale emigration I'm aware of is from the Great Famine of 1845 (which technically, wasn't a famine at all).

Milk, you could always get a job at one of the Irish pubs in New York City. We've got a lot of them (and a lot of illegal Irish immigrants, too). I was really sorry to see the demise of one really great pub on 57th Street – Tommy Makem's Irish Pub.

Anyway, if you do manage to slip over here, I promise I won't tell the Feds.

Yeah, Ireland is fucked due to governmental dickery. I'm in pretty much the same boat as Milky, but I've got me a shitty job to pay my way for now.

No, my brother got kicked out of a bar in Vancouver for telling them they were pulling pints wrong. For some reason they thought it was necessary to use a spoon for Guinness.....

Even better - Grogan's Grill is at Busch Gardens in Williamsburg. There is only one actual Irish person who works there, so you could be the second. :)

And you'd get to ride everything in the park for free!

With Guinness... there is no spoon. You knew it was coming people. :P

If you get caught without a working visa you may not be allowed back. Ever.

Which maybe explains why I couldn't find a Guinness spoon for sale on the UK Amazon site, but the US Amazon site had them. Goofy Americans with their Guinness spooooooons.

Then don't get caught! :D Or blame your American friends for not having voted for John McCain in the last Presidential election.
