Post Do-It-Yourself Book Safe
Didn't know for certain if this part of the forum was where this thread goes... If not, lemme know and I'll move it.

A blog I read now and then called The Art of Manliness posted this nifty little tutorial on how to turn an old book into a little safe to stash things in.

Total geek cred to you if you use an old copy of Baudrillard's Simulacra and Simulation like Neo did.

Though I have always found this interesting, I could never do it myself. Books to to precious to me and I could never cut one or burn one, etc...I'd have to buy one pre-made like that because the thought of mutilating a book makes me cringe. I love them all to much, new old, valuable and worthless alike.

Oh, I dunno, you could always make one out of any book written by the Author I Don't Speak Of.

Be careful with pre-made safes. Some look fantastic; they have a few pages from the beginning of whatever story is on the book's cover (say, The Red Badge of Courage) to kind of throw anyone looking for a secret safe off the trail. They look like actual books. That's what you want.

I got an old one made in the '70s by Reader's Digest from my grandmother. It's essentially a book-shaped plastic box with a dust cover from one of those old Reader's Digest story collections on it. Looks alright sitting on a bookshelf (though it looks radically out of place sitting on my shelf among such tomes as The Mothman Prophecies and They Knew Too Much About Flying Saucers, and you never want one of these "secret safes" to look out of place), but if you pull it even slightly off of the shelf to look at the actual pages, it becomes super-obvious that you're holding a small plastic box. :|

I'd cut up Twilight...In my dreams. Ah but it sounds so tempting.

I'll have to remember that if I ever decide on getting a book safe! It might be hard to find though considering 90% of my books are romance novels.

Aye, I think having a random copy of, say, Limbaugh's The Way Things Ought To Be on your shelf among the romance novels might be a tip-off. ;)

Just a bit. Though I do have a few thrillers and leather bound novels (Such as The Complete Works of Edgar Allan Poe). I also have a bunch of non-fictional books as well, which is great. I'm sure if I really wanted it I might be able to hide one within that pile.

I'd probably be really cliché about it and use a book about safes.

Haha, I was thinking something along those lines and using a Tarot Card book to hold my Tarot cards!

For some reason, that immediately made me think of this.

Ah, the old DIY book safe. I particularly recommend it for hiding prescription meds or petty cash from thieving housemates.

Or for stashing important documents.

I always leave a bit of cash in an obvious place, its better they feel thay have something than rip your place apart - possibly finding your real goodies.

Why buy it? I'm sure you could probably find a discarded copy in a dumpster or something... You know, where all copies of anything related to Twilight belong. :p
