Re: Artists that you wish you'd gotten into earlier
Never listened to much more than a few tracks before, but the one-man black metal unit Xasthur, the epitome of darkness in atmospheric metal!!! However, Xasthur has the problem of being like the "Frontline Assembly of black metal", meaning all albums are good, yet ultimately sound too similar, with very subtle progression. Therefore, not for those looking for variety, butt at least you know what you're getting one CD to the next.
Another remarkable neoclassical/orchestral act is Predella Avant, an amazing, yet all-too-obscure band. Their music is ALMOST martial industrial, though I don't find all that much industrial at it's core, more like martial/neoclassical/orchestral/ambient.

The Cure..... *hides* I got given some of the poppy stuff by a guy who turned out to be into little girls, so I got kind of put off by the genre and the guy who gave it to me lol. Took me a couple of years to hear the darker stuff.

I don't do much grind or death anymore but Carcass have a near unmatchable sound when it comes to Reek of Putrefaction and Symphonies of Sickness. for me I'll have to say Whitehouse, which is more or less powerelectronics. Also the Swans. You would think I've been a longtime fan, but I didn't discover them until 2004.

Yes, in fact, I've been on a quest to go back and rediscover all the classic albums that once made death metal great. I was lucky to have been first exposed to the genre in my pre-teens, back in the early 90s, when it was still in it's heyday, before the corruption of ridiculous pop-friendly genres like "melodeath" or "metalcore", or the mass infestation of Cannibal Corpse/Deicide clones. The first DM album I ever heard, luckily, was Bolt Thrower's Realm of Chaos, which completely shaped my impression of the genre, and to an extent, underground music in general. Sadly, with Carcass, I was exposed to them through Heartwork first, and.... as they say, first impressions are everything. I'm glad I went back and gave them a second chance!! There was once a time death metal WAS dark, morbid, and a definite force in the underground to be reckoned with!! If it hadn't changed so much in the mid-90s, it would probably fit right in with the "schwarze szene" as a style of music still considered acceptable for goths to listen to without losing those precious goth points

Re: Artists that you wish you'd gotten into earlier
I chastise myself for not getting into Coil sooner. They're so mystically versatile and their music has had varying effects on me lately. Some days they're all I listen to. It's a shame that Jhonn Balance died about six years ago, thus ending them...

Re: Artists that you wish you'd gotten into earlier
I always joke that musically speaking, I'm always 10 years behind the times (and usually long after their heydays have passed) - but it's so true! Pretty much every band I listen to, I wish I'd gotten into sooner.
The ones I *really* wish I'd gotten into are the ones that are no longer touring, but I actually could have seen at one time. Obviously, many of the bands I like were out more when I was very little, so no chance of seeing, say, Joy Division in concert. I was lucky to get interested in a couple that just happen to still be together and touring.

Alien Sex Fiend - I disliked them when I was younger, I love them now Christian Death- I hated Rozz's vocals in the past, though I don't know why! Tinsel Teeth- I found out about them literally the day after they came to my town.

Now that I think about it, I'm going to add Front 242.
I wish I found out about them in 5th grade instead of NIN.
