And, knowing the results, I'd want to travel back to a day before the events and place bets...

Though, I will add this: be careful with time travel and placing bets on future events! Remember, sensitive dependency on initial conditions! Every molecule of air affects whether a coin will hit heads or tails, and the presence of anyone extra in the area - say, a newly-arrived time traveler - could affect that outcome, and fortunes have been won or lost due to coin-toss chances before. Now take that one "chance" event - a coin toss - and multiply it by billions. Your presence back in time - the arrival of an extra body displacing molecules, taking up oxygen meant for someone/something else and expelling an extra amount of carbon dioxide, eating food that was going to be eaten by another, buying things meant to be purchased by another... You get what I mean. How many chance events would that time traveler be affecting just by being back in time, let alone by doing anything important (though I know none of you would dare do that, to preserve the timeline). Heisenberg and chaos theory are brutal tyrants when it comes to temporal mechanics.

Ah... But what if it has, in fact, already happened, and we are actually living in the continuum which has been affected by those actions? Is it, in fact, a kind of "pseudo-Destiny" that this should have occurred?

Is it, in fact, a kind of "pseudo-Destiny" that this should have occurred? 1. We would never know. 2. In all probability, it cannot happen. Grandfather Paradox, anyone? You want to undo all Creation? Go back in time and kill your mother before she meets your father... but if you do that, you wouldn't exist to do it, right? Yeah, that kind of stuff would've undone us all by now. (No, I don't believe in the "alternate universe" theory, though I have to be open to it, since my belief or disbelief in a thing does not negate the possibility of its existence.) Back when he believed time travel was a remote possibility, Stephen Hawking believed there was some part of nature that prevented temporal paradoxes like the Grandfather Paradox from happening. I agree that there must be something to prevent such occurrences from becoming reality - that, or time travelers are very, very cautious by nature - otherwise hardly any of us would have been born.

Re: What if you could spend a year in any part of human history?
Fascinating. I understand what you're saying, but the grandfather paradox is undermined by the self-interest of the time traveller.
There's this assumption that time travellers would be anarchic raging barbarians, tinkering with this, that and the other (and giving Freud the most hideous headaches in the process).
I don't think that's necessarily true. After all, I would suspect that an individual travelling through time would possess (a) a strong curiosity and level of interest (negating the idea of them being destructive or suicidal) and (b) a a high level of self-interest - meaning that he/she would take great care not to cause any problems which would lead to him/her suddenly ceasing to exist (otherwise, why undertake the time-travel exercise in the first place)?
Paradoxes within paradoxes...

Paradoxes within paradoxes... Thing is, thanks to Heisenberg, can you really ensure you're presence in the past will be so antiseptic? How can you ensure your presence won't accidentally cause the deaths of anyone important - including your own sires - in any way at all?

Whoa. Now, that has to be his weirdest story yet. Time moving backward as a story concept? Never thought I'd see that written of!

Curses! Foiled again by my arch nemesis science!
