I was gonna say that we weren't attacking people who are religious at all! We were simply agreeing about the idiocy of people who worship celebrities, cars, designer labels, all that jazz.
ETA~ I kind of understand Agent Black's loose definition of the term 'worship'. When I was a kid we were raised Baptist and they teach you pretty much that having any kind of interest in worldly possessions is 'worshipping' them. Basically, if you do anything besides go to church and pray, then you're worshipping something worldly. Even having a favourite toy is the same as having a 'false idol' before god. That's just some of the crap that made me leave the religion.
Bingo. I was raised in Pentecostal environs throughout my youth, and that same loose definition of "worship" was applied to damn near
everything. I remember when I first got online, Mom
hated it when I would spend so much time on my computer. (She didn't seem to mind the fifteen-year love affair I had with
Star Trek, though.
*shrugs* Parents can be quite selective about their hang-ups sometimes.) She would echo those same religious sentiments and call my computer the "one-eyed god" (referring to the monitor, of course; I didn't have the heart to tell her about the
other quite perverted reference involving one eye). That phrase always drove me bonkers.
I remember how the pastor at the Pentecostal church where I used to attend services would refer to having
any kind of favorite thing as having some kind of "god". Don't get me wrong; I could see the man's point, in the case of celebrity-worship, and I agree. In the case of a child having a favorite toy, though? Or a favorite photograph that you always have with you? Or holding something close to your heart because of who gave it to you?
Had a Lieutenant Commander Data action figure once upon a time.
Loved that thing. Went
everywhere with me. It wasn't because Data was my favorite character on
Next Gen, though. It was because it was the first non-clothing Christmas present my mother ever gave to me when we moved back to Texas. We didn't have very much money when I was growing up, so anything frivolous and non-essential that I got from Mom - like Data - was
greatly appreciated.
In the eyes of my pastor, Data would have been a "god". He wouldn't have known about the connection it had to my (now deceased) mother. All he would've seen is a young man older than twenty still carrying around a child's toy. That's the sort of thing that makes Christian churches, especially the fundamentalist churches, seem rather silly to me.

Well shit.
He saw right through you there Wolfy.
That's just cause I haven't perfected my stupid girl disguise, yet.

Ugh, please don't ever use such a disguise. Intelligence is too wondrous a thing to hide.
