Post Re: what is your favorite os
I used Vista briefly when I was a PC Tech and I didn't like it. All the other techs bad mouthed it as well and friends that use it say it crashes a lot. I use XP Pro sp2. But it looks like Microsoft will be stopping XP support soon. The new Internet Explorer 9 Beta won't even run on it....

Either the latest build of Ubuntu or Windows 7.

Nice. I like Xubunto 10.10. When I build my next PC I will run it and have no Windows on there at all...

Xubuntu is pretty good (think I tried version 9.10?). I'd like to have an all-Ubuntu machine, but I'm still learning Linux. I still need my Windows safety net.

About the only thing I'd consider keeping Windows for would be gaming. But everything else Xubunto does, and does it a lot better....

Yeah, I can't get Ubuntu - any flavor (vanilla Ubuntu, Xubuntu, Super OS, whatever) - to play any of my MMOs properly, either.

What MMOs do you play? My girlfriend plays WoW religiously. I play EVE On-line, and we both have gotten into Vindictous. :D

Only one MMO right now: Star Trek Online. I have become a huge STO whore, even more so than I ever was for WoW. I'm sure when The Old Republic or that Vampire: The Requiem MMO comes out, I'll play those, or maybe I'll go back to City of Heroes for a spell... But I've been having a tad too much fun in STO. I'm at the point where buying a lifetime subscription would probably save me a ton of money.

Oh nice! It is really good? Like good population/graphics and cool gameplay? And does it offer a free trial? :D

Graphics are definitely better than WoW; had to upgrade my hardware just to play STO. Population is fairly good. There are plenty of people running around for group play. It does indeed offer a 14-day free trial. Heck, I could email you a trial key, if you like.

They've had some awesome events in-game over the last months, but nothing will ever beat Open Beta to me: a massive Borg invasion. No matter where you went, including Earth, hundreds of cubes everywhere. If you went to Spacedock hoping for safe harbor, think again: both Borg and Klingons with personal cloaking devices all over the place. It was awesome!

Freaking sweet man! Yeah my girlfriend and I would both love a trial key! If could send it to me here in a PM that would be awesome.

Thanks! :)

And you can like "get out" of your ship and walk around and stuff right? That's the one thing I don't like about EVE On-line...

Kind of. Essentially, you spend much of the game zooming around in your starship. When you dock at a "home base" spaceport - think of these like the main cities from World of Warcraft - then you beam into the starbase and you can walk/run around and whatnot. There are quite a few starbases around, like Spacedock at Earth (you'll be seeing a lot of that place when you begin the game), Qo'nos (if you're a Klingon player; you don't get to play a Klingon until after you've finished the Federation tutorial and hit Lieutenant Grade 5) Deep Space Station K-7 (from "The Trouble With Tribbles"), Donatu station (a recent addition), Memory Alpha, Starbase 39 Sierra, Deep Space Nine (I usually spend most of my time docked there) and the Captain's Table (a recent addition accessible only to those with either a lifetime subscription or those who have been active players for 200 days). Recently, a few planet-side maps were added as well: Vulcan (it's basically just a social area that looks like the entrance to the temple at Mount Seleya), Andoria (a place to engage in ritual PvP) and Risa (another social area, this one more useless than any other; since the game is PG, all references to sex - or jamaharon, if you really wanna be geeky about it - have been removed and you're basically wandering around a large beach party). Additionally, you can walk around your ship's Bridge and other major areas (Sickbay, Engineering, the Transporter Room, the Mess Hall, your personal quarters) at any time and use these as a social area to meet with other players in private.

As for missions, there are several missions that occur on the ground or on derelict spacecraft/starbases/etc where you beam down with an away team of four NPCs whose careers you control (you're not just leveling your character alone, but several other NPC crewmen) and complete objectives, combat enemies, whatever.

Aaaaaaaaaand I think if you want to know more about the game, we should either chat in PM or make a new thread, lest we hijack the primary topic of this one further.

Nice, thanks for the in depth info. Please check out the PM I sent. :)

Back on topic, has anyone ever used IBM's OS/2 Warp? Now that's a hell of an OS. I used it before Windows95 came out and it is awesome. Very stable, and easy on resources. And it's fast. I don't think it is supported/sold anymore tho...

I use Windows 7, but Windows 98 will always be my favorite at heart because of the nostalgia factor. Plus, the PC games in the nineties really kicked ass.

Agreed! Why don't they make great games like that anymore?
