 Re: Whats your favorite band
Boyzone is a five-piece boyband from Ireland. Manufactured. 'Nuff said, I think *spits three times and makes signs to ward off evil spirits*
Joy Division have always left me rather cold. I heard them an awful lot on John Peel's radio show, and the music press loved them. I was sad when the news broke that Ian Curtis had died; although information was sketchy at first, it was obviously a tragedy, and as more emerged it just seemed even more of a waste.
However, I've always found the association with "goth" rather odd. Like Theatre of Hate, Joy Division were history before the subculture even existed. They weren't "highly influential", really, either; they were one of the better acts who were exploring similar musical territory in the wake of punk, toning down the chaotic, brash elements of punk and re-introducing elements of musical skill, although retaining the energy. At that time, in Britain, a number of small independent labels sprang up around the country, which were designed to give a platform to acts which were interesting and unusual but which weren't getting attention from the large companies which were - as usual - only interested in what was happening in and around London.
Consequently, labels based in cities like Manchester, Leeds, Birmingham, Liverpool, and even Norwich attracted primarily local talent, and as a result local scenes with a distinctive approach started to develop. Joy Division were major players on the Manchester scene, and to be fair I think many of the bands in the Leeds/Bradford scene (which was where what we know as "goth" really developed from) were probably listening to, and reacting to, what Manchester was doing (there has historically always been a sense of rivalry between Manchester and the major cities of Yorkshire, on nearly all levels), but nonetheless retains an identity which is somewhat different.

 Re: Whats your favorite band
I won't pretend I know all the history of goth music - because I know I don't! I knew they were more "pre-goth" but definitely felt there was a relationship between them (not just the punk aspect either). I like how their music is dark (but not necessarily depressing), and it leaves me feeling very emotional on certain levels. As for Ian Curtis, I guess I can relate to him - a little. He was an epileptic and doing the concerts caused problems for him (goodness, I can't even sit near the stage - can't imagine being on it). I do like Joy Division though. They are definitely one of my favorites. Some of my others are Green Day, Chicago, Siouxsie and the Banshees, another one that's grown on me is Muse, Alien Sex Fiend, Public Image Ltd, etc.

 Re: Whats your favorite band
Don't worry, Donutte; I'm far from an expert in the way that members like, say, centurion and LostinDreaming are - they really know their stuff. I'm just someone who's lived through it and was old enough at the time to keep track of what was going on. I sometimes like to share that experience.
