Lately I've been rediscovering the early albums of The Misfits, as well as the band Danzig was subsequently involved in called Samhain.

The former sounds especially punk to me, and I love that stuff.

What I want to know is: do goths eschew the Horror Punk genre, or can it be regarded as part of the goth music scene?

I don't see why it couldn't be.

I sometimes have a hard time seperating the camper death rock from horror punk, but I'm always terrible when it comes to genres.

Personally, I consider most Horrorpunk to the closer to the hardcore punk end of the spectrum than the Goth end, and it seems to me to be musically closer to Psychobilly, generally being faster and "harder" than Deathrock. Horrorpunk bands are usually a staple at any Psychobilly festival. But there are bands like the Horrorpops on the other end of the spectrum, though they classify themselves simply as rock n roll.
Stylistically, there is indeed a lot of overlap with Deathrock and "primitive" Goth. Frankly, if I hear another Horrorpunk band that sounds like the Misfits I may scream. A few times I've joked about going up to bands and asking "Hey, how's that lawsuit with Glenn Danzig going???" A lot of Psychobilly is the same way. I am a big fan of Psychobilly, but many bands sound indistinguishable.

Musically, horror punk is pretty solidly punk, and considered a subset of punk, but the connection to goth is through deathrock, as it has both a goth rock and punk side.

Also, Samhain was probably the closest project Danzig had to classic deathrock/goth rock, while his solo stuff was pretty solidly traditional doom metal, so the connection could also come from Samhain.

Then there's The Damned's Phantasmagoria album.....

If you like this genre, give The Brickbats and The Horrorpops a try. I'm fond of both of them when I'm in a party mood.

I read on another thread how the matter of Deathrock can be confusing, and sometimes it confuses me also.

For example: 'Christian Death' [their Rozz Williams period] is obviously very firmly in the post-punk camp, however, the other so-called Deathrock band most people know about is '45 Grave', and to my ears they sound decidedly punk, and not post-punk/goth at all, which leads me to assume that deathrock is more a reference to a fashion style and a period at a particular moment in time [LA in the early to mid 80s] than a specific style of music.

Don't forget Kommunity FK, they sound more along the lines of Christian Death than 45 Grave.

I love horrorpunk! Excuse me, GOOD horrorpunk! Listen to Blitzkid, they are the head of the genre today and are great musicians, and super nice guys in person. But yeah, it's one of the most bashed genres of music for being unoriginal, but since no one in the scene can get over the Misfits breaking up I guess all you can do is try to pick up where they left off...

As far as it being a subset of Goth? All the dumbass horrorpunk kids at the shows I would go to bashing me for my more romantic dress code and better makeup would beg to differ! But that shouldn't stop you from enjoying the music, or at least trying!

Horror punk definitely has deathrock connections, but like Centurion said, very few of the bands have a sound that veers out of the regular punk or psychobilly spectrum. And many of them are way too stuck on the Misfits. Though there are exceptions.

As far a horror punk recommendations, check out early Cancerslug stuff if you can find it, and Naughty Zombies, who have a lot of stuff online for free.

I'm going to have to echo this sentiment. They have some really neat stuff.

I'm pretty much agreeing with Wolfie, like many before me, as long as it gets close to the Goth side of things, it's fine with me.

I actually (very recently) started having a listen to the Misfits. Been trying to look into more gigs lately, and the Misfits were playing on Halloween, but frankly I didn't want to go to the city that night (not to mention I had to work the next day). But I digress. I had a listen to them and they were pretty darn good!

I've not listened to any of the others mentioned, though I think I'll have to take a few to listen to them too.
