No need to be sorry. Wasn't something you did, as far as I can tell. Board glitch.

Now let's just hope I didn't break anything by making that change. :?

This was actually my fault I guess.

New signups are put into the 'Registered Users' group, which has limited access. The Limited Access role apparently had search turned off. I turned on search for the limited access role, and it should work now.

When people hit 10 posts, they automatically get put into the Members group, which has standard access (which obviously includes search).

Oh, and Lunamoth, when you see it saying 'No role assigned...' it means that the user is inheriting permissions from their group. The forums allow you to assign permissions on a per-user basis if you want, but I tend not to, and just leave it to their group membership. In this case, the limited access role associated with he registered users group was wrong.

Nice to see that you didn't bother reading the Rules or you would have answered your own question:

Quote:
New Members and Posting
This is covered in the FAQ, but since it's brought up so often, it's also worth mentioning here. Members cannot post until their application for registration has been approved by an Administrator. Approvals are processed almost daily. Once approved, members fall into the "Newb" category. "Newb" members are permitted to reply to existing topics. Once a member has submitted 10 posts, he/she becomes a "Member" and is then able to reply to existing threads and create threads. Increasing your post count by posting inanities to gain the ability to open your own topic will not be tolerated. In addition, hi-jacking a thread to discuss your own topic because you can't create a thread yet will not be tolerated either.

*sigh* I am almost tempted to automatically pip all new users who ask that question, just for being a moron who does not read - especially when this question has been answered in quite a few places (The Rules thread, the FAQ, and in several topics in the help thread).

Rather than post this here, you really should go ahead and make a post about it in the "User Subs" area.

[...]Learn the Board Functions
"Search" has already been mentioned, but you should also familiarize yourself with the "Quote," "Edit," and "Report to Moderator" buttons. "Quote" is used to quote someone's post or other material you are referring to in your post. "Edit" is used to edit your own post when you find an error or want to add something after you've submitted a post. "Report to Moderator" is used to report a post to the Administrator/Moderator staff when you feel it's something we need to see and deal with. Do not use the "Report to Moderator" button for minor infractions like netspeak or topic resurrection. The forums here are very heavily patrolled, and minor infractions will be dealt with as soon as they are seen.
[...]

I might have overlooked something, but I can't find the 'edit' button anymore? I think it used to be in the posts I made, like 'quote' and 'pm' buttons, but I don't see it anymore. Am I going blind? If it is really missing, can we edit in another way? Not necessary at the moment, but I have used in the past to correct things that didn't come out quite the way I wanted and I'd like to be able to do that.

Another queston: is the 'url' button (on the screen where you write the post) the one to use if you want to make a link which says (for example) "click this" instead of the copied link? If so, how does that work? If not, and it is really easy to do, then please explain as well. If it's hard to do, I think I will just continue to copy/paste links :P

With regards the "edit" button, hun, it disappears off a post after an hour or two (I've never established exactly how long).

The way to replace a URL with a piece of text:

1. Copy and paste the URL into your post, immediately ahead of the text you want to use to say "click me" - for example,

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4142/481 ... .jpgWhitby Abbey.

2. Highlight the URL AND the text you want to use as the hyperlink, and then press the URL button, like so:

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4142/4813190706_dea4fb790a.jpgWhitby%20Abbey

(please ignore the %20 appearing between "Whitby" and "Abbey" - this is appearing automatically and I have no control over it. Just imagine it's not there!)

THEN you need to edit the URL slightly.

Firstly, replace the square bracket symbol (]) between URL and http with an "equals" sign, eg:

[url=http://...

Then place a square bracket symbol (]) between the last character of the URL and the first character of the hyperlink you want to create, eg:

...ea4fb790a.jpg]Whitby

And that's it! The result should be:

Whitby Abbey

If that isn't clear because of the way the post processing facility handles URLs, can I suggest hitting the "quote" button, and copying and pasting the entire text of this post into a word processor - you'll then be able to see exactly what I've done.

Hope this helps, hun!! :D

Thank you Minnie! I never noticed that the button disappeared after a while; it was only yesterday that I couldn't find the edit button anymore. It means that I will have to be more careful in posting on 'slow' days, as it might take me too long to realise that the posts might need some editing. :P

The link thing seems doable, so I will give it a try next time I post a link. Will certainly copy it into a text programme first, because I will need to 'cheat' the first times.

It's not really "cheating" - it took me forever to figure out how to do it, and in the end the best way was to do as I've suggested - hit "Quote" to see how someone had done it, and then figure it out from there! So, I followed the formula until I figured out the quickest and easiest way to do it. It just takes a bit of time to get used to!
