 Secret Goth
Hey everyone,
Okay, so I confess, when I'm at work I'm a “secret goth”, I have a job working in the public and I've toned down my look a lot... Meaning that I wear black, mostly yes, and that I've got my little skull hair-clips and that's it. My tattoos are hidden, I don't wear my favorite movie/band t-shirts, torn-out clothes, spikes and leather, etc when I work. But of course I go wild when I'm off-work! Anyways, I'm sure I'm not alone, this is a temporary job, so I'll be 100% myself again when I get my dream job, but for now, it hurts!
The thing that bugs me is when other alternative people come in the store and I just want to show them my tattoos and talk about music and movies with them and everything, but I don't... Some of my co-workers know about my true passions, and it's cool, but I can't show my true-side to most people because it's a very conservative place and everything...
But it's okay, I'm not complaining, I just had to share it with you guys, makes me feel better! Oh, and don't worry, it's not like they'd fire me if I did show my tattoos or anything, but they would probably tell me to tone it down a little! I'm not looking for any solutions, it's only for a short period of time, so I'll live through it, and I might even uncover some of my tattoos this summer and it's gonna be okay.
The only reason I started this thread is so other hidden goths can share their guilty feelings about changing themselves for a job or a family reunion, etc.

 Re: Secret Goth
Yeah...tell me about secret goth! I'm a middle-aged woman living in a VERY conservative small town. If i'm going out of town, I feel comfortable "gothing out" more, but when I'm at work or doing errands locally, I tone it down quite a bit. The only time I break out is on Halloween, and then I'm just dressing like I'd like to every day.

 Re: Secret Goth
I wore my full-on look to work once. They asked if I had just escaped from the Middle ages... Asking for it really! So they know, but I'm in mostly black/red/purple casual gear. Meh. -LS

 Re: Secret Goth
In October, I encourage my staff at the library to dress up in full Halloween regalia. The public loves it.
That's mostly so I can get away with gothing up at work, and still pass as professional.

No real secret here. I tend to wear black slacks or (smart) stretch jeans, with a black (or purple) blouse or tee-shirt, and my trench over the top.
If, however, my main customers knew they were dealing with a self-identifying goth...

 Re: Secret Goth
i work as a chef in a flea market, as you can emagine, we get a decent share of goths coming in, but most are from the south... toronto and mississauga, so on... when i work, i usually wear all black formal-esque attire... sadly, we do hand cut fries, which i always cut during the morning hours... so my clothes get completely starch baked, plus, i barely look goth when i am dressedlike that..
so often ive seen someone my age in there and wanted to sit down and talk, or get to know them in a slightly less out-right approach.... but, alas... its usually during lunch, when i cant get any sort of break, or i just dont fit the look at all, and the few i do have time to talk to generally dont take me very seriously, given i am blond and all... so yeah... you are not alone out there where secret goths are concerned... oh, and my neighbor is an absolute ....nevermind.... point is, she is offended by everything from clowns to men with shotguns... makes things tough and very annoying for me to really dress up as best i can and not have her on my back trying to pull daemons from my soul.. lol

 Re: Secret Goth
Well, for lots of years, full-on regalia was the order of the day, and I never had a job that had any dress requirements at all, so I've been pretty lucky. My current money-job has uniform requirements, so there's not much gothing about at work which makes all-black-clothes-free-time really nice.
