Neither can a lot of the people who do that dance! It's just funny seeing 90% of the dancefloor doing the same exact thing.

Yeah, the side-to-side thing....... I like people to get on the floor and do all sorts of bizarre things!!!
Goth clubs to me should be more like a Black Mass, not a rave..... Industrial nights should be exactly what industrial is supposed to be.... uncompromising bizarre experimental music.
When you dance, it should come from the soul...... dancing is an artform!!! Not just some mindless reaction to some mindless thumping beats.

I'd have much more respect for you than the "ravers" who don't really give a shit about the music being played(possibly because most of the music played is typical uninspired EBM, which I refuse to call "industrial")

Nothing wrong with having fun.... having fun doesn't require techno beats and pop tunes, does it???

But apparently there's something wrong with having fun if you're doing it to "typical uninspired EBM".

Re: The Various Goth Subsets: Do they REALLY Exist Nowadays?
I really don't dance at all until I've got a fair amount of alcohol in me, and by that point there's not a whole lot of 'art' to anything I'm doing. Not even when I'm sitting at a back table furiously sketching whatever random pictures come to my mind on every napkin and beer coaster within reach (one of those strange things I do when drunk - at least when not dancing very badly).

My point: If i walk into a goth club, I want DARK music, and GOOD music!! Music is the main event for me. If I do not get quality music, if all I get is a dress-up party rave, I cannot enjoy myself. Some people are into that, that's alright, I disassociate myself from that scene.

When you dance, it should come from the soul...... dancing is an artform!!! Not just some mindless reaction to some mindless thumping beats. This is an outstanding point: most of the music that one hears at a "mainstream" Goth night is not even Industrial/EBM, it's "dance" music that owes a great deal to techno. Even most of the "Industrial Nights" I've been to play basically the same thing. This kind of stuff is not really for Rivets or Goths, it's "lowest common denominator" music that anyone can feel comfortable dancing to: walk-ins, the after hours crowds, just about anyone. I know quite a few hard-core rivets who are just as put off by hours of head numbing thumpola as I am. Maybe this stuff has it's place. But if I go to an 'Industrial Night', I think I should actually hear some real Industrial, and ditto for a 'Goth Night'. I understand that the clubs need to make money, but I've seen many cases where the total ravola formula doesn't even work in the long run. It runs away all your most dedicated customers, while the "walk in" crowd is very fickle and will move on the next new club. I've heard DJ's whine " Goths, even if we don't play your kind of music, please some out and 'support the scene'." Huh? As I asked one of them, if the thumpola stuff stuff is so popular, why do you need our paltry numbers? If they want me to spend my money at their night, then play my requests, too. Simple. While most clubbers may indeed want to strictly hear "Dance" music, clubs are only one element of the Goth scene, an not necessarily the definitive one. For example, many more people are into new generation Batcave/Goth (for want of a better term) than a lot of people realize. It's simply that they have moved back underground, out of the mainstream Goth clubs.

Re: The Various Goth Subsets: Do they REALLY Exist Nowadays?
EXACTLY!!! Generally in the local scene here, the generations have split with the younger kids getting into the whole "look at me" cosplay raves and the older, cynical goths/rivetheads are generally distancing themselves from goth club events, dressing like old hippies/bikers/metalheads, and taking part in more underground experimental/avant-garde events, or just plain getting back into punk/metal. Why?? Because it seems like no one in this younger generation really CARES about goth as a musical/artistic movement anymore, that the only reason people go to these events is to dress up and try to get laid, and generally TO BE SEEN. People just want nothing to do with it anymore, because it seems that the scene/movement of underground dark culture the old schoolers worked so hard to build has been turned into a joke by kids nowadays. Anyhow, this Friday is one of my regular DJ events which usually features guest avant-garde/industrial/dark ambient performers all around the world, and while very few people there actually dress the part, it's leagues closer to a real goth event than what passes for "goth club events" in this area nowadays!!! Death to the costume rave generation!!! And yes, "minstream" goth events hold absolutely no interest for me(save WGT or other European events that promote the unified "Schwarze Szene"), it's always done it's best in the underground!!

Strangely enough, whenever I go to an Anime convention, where cosplay raves are typically main events, I see lots of people dressed in goth attire. (usually cybergoth). Considering most people seem to go to anime conventions to dress up and get attention, you may very be on to something.
