Classmates "sold into slavery" to illustrate Roman history
Quote: Eleven-year-old Micaela Reyes' best friend and four other students were sold into slavery last week during a private-school lesson in Roman history and behavior reinforcement.
The exercise was incorporated into a fifth-grade history lesson titled "Rome, Ruler of the Ancient World" at Eagle's Nest Christian Academy, a school in Milton [Delaware] for pre-kindergarten through eighth grade.
The five students who were auctioned off to classmates had low merit points, said Reyes' mother, Margaret, who called the lesson "demeaning." Read the full article here. Quote: "If they volunteered, that would have been one thing," [child psychologist Vicki Panaccione] said. "But to take the kids at the bottom of the performance -- that's just like putting a big 'L' for loser on their foreheads." Personally, I'd want to BRAND a big "L" on the forehead of my slave! Christian schools are fun! Wheeee! -- Nephele

The only thing I can think of here is that the school's name reminds me of Kehlsteinhaus.....

toGA toGA toGA....that's what I'm talkin' about.
There's so much potential for fun here. The slaves did on occasion rebel, there were gladiators, they could make their own money out of playdoh or something, another class could be visigoths. Just so much cool stuff.

How creepy (and not the good kind of creepy, either)... Lachrymose wrote: toGA toGA toGA....that's what I'm talkin' about.

They should have made the selection random to point out anyone could be kidnapped and sold into slavery. The Barbary pirates are still a noticeable part of folk history here, especially on the coastal regions (approx ~1 million taken from Europe).

-LS Very good point. Even Julius Caesar was once kidnapped by pirates. The kidnapping of Roman children by slaver pirates is also a theme that has appeared more than once in Caroline Lawrence's excellent fiction series for children and young adults, titled The Roman Mysteries. I wonder what reading is being encouraged by the teacher of that class? -- Nephele

Ls had a great idea. I think the lesson itself was an awesome way to experiece what had happened (even if just pretend) but the way they went around it was wrong.

It's also not right to stand up a child in front of an entire class and sing songs making fun of how they always finish their work last. But I digress...

-LS Brings back memories of my middle school teacher. She would make us pick random leaflets from the 1800s. We could be captains of a massive ship or the slaves being transported on that ship. I remember how we learned alot about slavery, and how some men would cut their own feet off and jump overboard to escape. Or how we would learn basic military commands before even going to junior ROTC. Great teacher, but too bad I was such a lazy kid who didn't appreciate it back then.
