Post Goth Bands You Want to Dislike But Can't
I really, really want to despise 'Sopor Aeternus':

They [actually, she/he] is/are too out-there, too weird and disturbing even for me [and i kinda like Dimmu Borgir, even though they're Norwegian black metal band, which I normally wouldn't touch with a ten-foot pole!].

I want to ignore them and not have to deal with them, but.....

...I'm forced to admit, against my desires: their music is REALLY REALLY good!

Damnit!

HERETIC!!!!

You might be shocked at just how much a group or artist can grow on you.

I really want to dislike Sisters of Mercy because of Eldritch....but I just can't!

Me too, for the reasons you'd cite and for some that are specific to me, such his his aggressive leftism lately ['anarcho-syndicalist' my patootie!]

Nevertheless...I can't do without his music, it's indispensible, at least before the 'Vision Thing' album. And even there, I love 'More'.

does it have to be agoth band?

I know I REALLY and extremely want to hate Evansecence. I cannot stand Amy Lee, i loathe her! I do not like the band itself or what they stand for (if you know what they stand for, they change so often!), yet despite all of that, there are a few songs by them that I really like.

For a goth band - i would have to think on that one, because there haven't really been any that I can think of other than SOM for the reason that Wolfmammy stated.

Yeah. Sometimes I feel the same way about Evanescence - especially about Amy. But dammit: some of their songs are catchy (and her wardrobe kicks ass!).

As for goth/ish bands... Probably Angelspit. Now I officially listen to more than two songs by them so my allegience to them is questionable at this point.

Emilie Autumn as well. Just coming way close to being another Lady Gaga-ish artist, almost on the edge of being mainstream. But I really do love her music.

Sopor Aeternus.... too weird/out there???
Can such a concept exist???

Personally, because of the commercial money-fiends they've become, I really wanted to hate Lacrimosa, but due to their first album, and the fact they still manage to always squeeze a nice song or two into every album afterwards, it's impossible.

Also, it is rather well-known my dislike for the Japanese abomination known as Visual Kei...... teenage boys dressed like dolls playing pop music.
However.... going back to the roots of the scene in the 80s, there were some rather kick-ass thrash metal bands who followed the look of bands like X Japan:
Tokyo Yankees, Rommel, Aion, Gargoyle, GISM, Doom, Rosenfeld, Harkenkreuz......

Many of these bands took cues from thrash metal greats like Slayer, Dark Angel, Kreator, and Destruction, and combined it with big purple hair and make-up that would make Rozz himself jealous ;)
Some bands, like Rommel, Rosenfeld, Mein Kampf, and Harkenkreuz used a "nazi" image for shock value, despite being Japanese anarchists. It was quite similar to the Brazilian thrash scene(Sepultura, Sarcofago), who did much of the same thing in the 80s.

How can anyone want to make themselves dislike them? I thought that people would only want to dislike cheesy, fake-sounding bands.
I'm the opposite with SA - I know what they (she) do(es) is extremely good-quality stuff and after reading what people say about them, I feel like I SHOULD like them.

I do have mixed feelings on Emilie Autumn - I absolutely love her music, but went to a concert and thought "Are these people trying too hard to show that they're daring/edgy/naughty?" but that doesn't make me hate her music.

I REALLY want to hate Theatres Des Vampires (I don't know how much goth they are) but I love their music so much! Although the ungodly cheesiness I can't stop listening to neither "Nightbreed of Macabria" nor "Pleasure and Pain"...
Same goes to all those Electro bands like "Blutengel", "Wolfsheim", "Diary of Dreams", "Das Ich". I can't get to love them but I can't stop listening too...

Neither Das Ich nor Diary of Dreams used to be "electro" bands.

Ach!!

NEVER get into a band by listening to their newer material first!!! :x

Well Sopor makes my mind cleave into two differing factions. While listening to the artist one part just thinks it tis a very silly thing and slightly embarrassing (said with full Monty Python silly voice), while the other spirals my mind into the depths. I guess that is part of her trying to be honest (to whatever degree), some bands just don't feel as if the lyrics are part of their experiences, just a fiction to promote an image, e.g. MJs "BAD" album is a gonad shriveling example for the former.

Post Re: Goth Bands You Want to Dislike But Can't
Interesting thread, never really though about that. Wait maybe I did.

I like Sopor, really. Always makes me wonder if it's all an act, or actually true. Still, I can't argue with the work, I think most of it is fantastic.

Part of me wants to hate bands like Suicide Commando or Funker Vogt, it's not very deep, just agressive, but such huge fun to dance to.

Sometimes I want to hate skeletal family for the slightly annoying voice, or Mephisto Walz for the slightly whiney voice. But I just like the bands too damn much.

And then there are the bands of which I highly doubt whether they are actually have nazi sympathies or not. Like Blood Axis, Triarii or Feindflug. I find WWII pretty interesting myself, but it's hard to distinguish interest from agreement sometimes (not for myself though).

At times I want to dislike religiously tinted bands, like Backworld, Dead Can Dance or Of The Wand & The Moon. I find religion very interesting, but I don't like stuff that's too drenched in it. Still, it's hardly as though these bands sound as if they're trying to convert me. Woulden't listen to them if they did.

Blood Axis ain't nazi, and a damn good band!
The only nazi goth band I can think of, other than the horribly BAD "gothic metal" attempt by Rahowa, is Radio Werewolf, who mix it up with Laveyan Satanism, which is pure irony in my opinion.

I guess Radio Werewolf is another band I would consider suitable for this thread, as I wholly hate Shreck's racist opinions, but I actually like some of their music.
On the same train of thought, NS black metal is the biggest joke of a scene I've ever heard of, but about 50% of the bands actually DO play good music.

I never feel guilty about buying any CD, because I know most of the money goes to the retailer, and here all underground retailers are Japanese, which actually is more like me giving the middle finger to the nazi scene saying "Hah, look!! I bought YOUR CD from a foreigner, not from you!!" :P

I think I figured out the reason why I feel a sense of annoyance with Sopor Aeternus:

Whenever I come across something German and 'disturbing' and looking like it crawled out of something like 'The Cabinet of Dr. Cagliari', Mike Myers playing 'Dieter' in the 'Sprockets' skits on the old SNLs comes to mind.

'Most disturbing...!'

I had never listened to Sopor before this thread (kill me if you wish), but after hearing some of there songs on youtube (limewire is not coming up with results- go figure), but most espeically their song No One Is There I do not think i could ever find myself wanting to dislike them...
