What is your favorite remake/cover song?
This thread is probably more for the goths that have been around for some time, but some of the younger folks may also have some favorites.
What I want to know is this...what older "gothy" song has been redone or covered the best, and by who?
For me, I would have to be "Running Up That Hill" originally performed by Kate Bush...recently redone by Placebo. This is the song that is in the previews for Daybreakers (which I'm thinking I must see), but I heard it a couple of months ago before the Daybreakers preview. Placebo did such a good job with it, I have a hard time figuring out which version I like better...Kate Bush's or Placebo's!

I know I'm going to make people hate me, but I love "The Rain" cover by Theatres Des Vampires. For some reason I can't stand the original version...

Re: What is your favorite remake/cover song?
Funny how you mentioned the covers of "Running Up That Hill", Butterfly, because my favorite cover is also of "Running Up That Hill", only done by Faith and the Muse. It was the first song I heard done by them. I also have a tough time decided which I like better, the original or the cover by F&M, but I for sure don't really like any of the covers done by metal acts. I don't think this song is meant to be loud and rambunktuous. Other covers that I like are the compilation done by Cinderella Effect, who is DJane of Blutengel. My favorites are "Clone Your Lover" original by Zeromancer, "Standing" originally by VNV Nation, and "After Dark" original Tito and Turantuala. Others are "Safety Dance" done by Fear Cult, "White Rabbit" done by Collide, "Sanvean" done by Sarah Brightman, "Spirit" done by Persephone (the chick from L'Ame Immortelle), and "Over the Hills and Far Away" done by Nightwish (if we are to include metal stuff).

Gotta go with Snake River Conspiracy's cover of "Lovesong" originally done by the Cure.
At a close second is Smashing Pumpkin's cover of "You're All I've Got Tonight" originally done by the Cars.

I absolutely love the Bella Morte cover of Berlin's 'The Metro'.
Or if you want something older, There's the Cramps Cover of Peggy Lee's already sultry torch song 'Fever'... slow burn to melt your vinyl .... er I mean digital download.
One more? Though I am not too fond of the rest of their work, AFI did do a very swanky job covering the Misfits "Halloween". Candy apples in razorblades.. ah the memories!
..OH, and Do I even have to mention Johnny Cash's chilling version of "Hurt"?

Antimatter's cover of Black Sun is one of my all time favorite covers, of any genre. It's so good I play it about as often as the original, which says a lot because I've always really liked the original.

Re: What is your favorite remake/cover song?
One of my favorite remake/ cover songs is REM's Losing My Religion done my Graveworm. His voice and the way he changes the chorus really make that song for me. Instead of "I thought that i seen you laughing, i thought that i heard you sing. I think i thought i saw you try." Graveworm says "I thought that i heard you screaming, i thought that i heard you cry, i think i thought i saw you die." The link : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=avLc-nUTZJo

I do like Strange Boutique's cover of "A Strange day". Robert Smith's cover of Hendrix's "Purple Haze" is cool, too.

Re: What is your favorite remake/cover song?
Stargazer, it's just 'Rain'. I hate most covers. Everytime I hear some douche doing a bad Queen or 'Everyday Is Hallowe'en' cover I want to puncture their optical orbs with drumsticks. I shan't go into my disgust at all of the hiphop acts stealing choruses and beats/baselines from 80s songs. BE CREATIVE YOU TWATS! My favorite cover is: Type O Negative ~ Cinnamon GirlI don't actually like the original and didn't listen to it for years because it's a Neil Young song and I hate him. One day I forgot to skip past it and I liked it. Foo Figthers cover of Darlin' Nikki isn't bad.

Re: What is your favorite remake/cover song?
I SO know what you are talking about with regards to today's acts "sampling" or down right stealing from perfectly good 80's songs!! That is one thing I miss about the 80's...we had a lot of really good ARTISTS. Yes, they were artists, not just acts. So many wrote their own stuff. We had far fewer "acts"...people that sing to a soundtrack or a studio band. We had more actual groups, and they groups usually had their own distinguishing sound. You could usually hear the beginning of a song, even if it was a brand new one you never heard before, and be able to tell who it was because of the style. These days, whenever the kids turn the radio to the "pop" stations, I can't believe how much everyone sounds like everyone else. There are a few out there who have a bit of uniqueness to them, but very few compared to the 80's.
And even worse, they go and totally screw up perfectly good songs from our time!!! There are a few exceptions, hence the reason for this thread...to highlight the ones that actually can do a cover of a song and not suck! Of course, if you look at the list, seems the bands that do good covers are bands that are good at doing their own style to begin with...not just another copy-cat "pop" act.

I'll have to check that one out. I've liked Deadsy's version of that song as of late.

Losing My Religion preformed by Graveworm, no question.
