 Re: Truly gothic foods?
Graymalkin wrote: I believe any food can be gothic, it just depends upon the way it was served. I.E. Strawberries alone wouldn't be much, but served within a glass or silver chalice placed on top of a black fabric lined platter would give it that gothic flair. If it's glass, you could drizzle squished strawberry juice all over the strawberries to make them look like hearts lying in a pool of their own blood, and decorate the platter with more fruits, or even polished crystals if you want. Go nuts!
As far as drinks go, I think the most gothic beverage on can serve would be red wine. Followed closely by sweet, sweet coffee. That is a good point. Not only the ingredients, but the manner in which the food is served can increase its gothic aspect. For example, serving high tea instead of a regular snack or a formal five course dinner service a la Russe instead of a family style meal harkens back to the late victorian period.

for some strange reason, I'm reminded of the dinner scene from Rocky Horror Picture Show.
If you can get a coffin with a clear lid for your dinner party, I'm sure your guests will talk about it for years to come!

You might also put a black lace table cloth or something else with goth flair.

 Re: Truly gothic foods?
So far, for my halloween party, I'm planning to have a large, black and preferablbly intrcately decorated bird cage to put assorted fancy cheeses in. I was also planning to have vases full of black tulips, red roses and dead sticks. There will be wreaths of mushrooms and twigs, laced in fake spider webs snakeing arround the buffet and I'm planning to paint pressed leaves white and draw intricate little pictures on them (the moon, bats, candleabras etc.) and scatter tham arround the table. The food itself will be surved on multi layeres silver (or look-a-like) platters with food on the lower levels and candles on the top.
On the menue is: -Black Pasta -Purple, orange and white carrots and coliflower. -Stinky cheese. -Pizza (forgive me, but it is a party). -Dark chocolate volcano fudge brownies -Blackberry pie -Blood orange juice (with star anis on top to look pretty). -Hot chocolate -Tea
The drinks are in old, brown mugs if it's hot chocolate or tea, and fancy wine glasses if it's juice. Even the crap like candy and chips will be dolled up with dead, curling vines or hanging in woven nets from the cealing.
What think you?

Hmm, maybe Devils food cake? While not a food itself, eating off of very elegant, antique plates might give a Gothic edge to food. Top it off with roses and candles (silver knives and spoons...sorry, couldn't resist the Rozz reference ), the candles giving the only light of course. I may have to do this sometime soon. Just got to find some nice antique style plates and utensils.

Another decadent dessert: pit and soak cherries in some sort of liqueur (such as kirsch or amaretto) or rum, and then dip them in dark chocolate. I kept saying I'd make them and I keep getting sidetracked. And now I am hungry. And NO I do NOT suggest absinthe for that purpose. bleck!

I agree with mc-buzzin over here. Apples were the forbidden fruit.. sounds pretty devious to me. And all things devious/spooky/musty is goth, amirite?

In my humble opinion the most gothic food is boiled cow tongue with olives, baby onions and bull blood sauce. It rocks ! And one more thing: the "bull blood" is not actually blood, it is a type of black wine which has lots of alcohol and aphrodisiac properties.

 Re: Truly gothic foods?
Bull blood sounds delightful! I have a roast in the crock pot right now, cooking in burgundy and rosemary. It smells really good. It's cheap, hearty, and I'm sure when I cut into it there will be a delightful oozing of deep red juices. Who doesn't like roast beef! (except vegetarians...much love, vegetarians.)

I've seen it sold in nearby grocery stores for a low price.
