I am new to the gothic subculture...actually I've known about it for about 6 years ( I am 21yrs old). I'm not sure If I am goth, I don't really consider myself goth, but I like the idea of it. I like some gothic music-Abney Park, Collide, some songs I've heard by Siouxie and The Banshees, Bauhaus, and KMFDM. I also listen to some alternative, metal, classical, celtic, and many different types. Except, country-eck!
I dress in black sometimes, but not always. I think black is a beautiful color to wear when worn in good taste. I have always been drawn to "the darkside" so to speak. However,
I was raised a christian, and I tend to stick with christian beliefs although I am interested in other religions.
I am a night person, I just feel more comfortable at night.
Not that is has anything to do with being goth, but it's just me. I don't fit in with the punks, skaters or any other types.
I think that gothic things are beautiful, and I hope that I can belong in it's unique and dark beauty.
So am I totally nuts or should I try the gothic lifestyle?-Or am I already living it? I am just trying to find a place to be and people like myself.

I may not be the best person to answer this question, because I was quite confused about my place until recently also. However it sounds to me like you're well on your way to being goth, if not there already
You may want to check out some more goth bands. I would recommend Sisters of Mercy, Christian Death, London After Midnight and delve a little deeper into the bands you said you've already had a taste of (ie. Siouxsie & the Banshees, Bauhaus etc.)
There's another string under the gothic category called 'What Gothic Is And Is Not' that was started by Blood Rose. She has some excellent ideas that you should read if you're interested in our wonderful little subculture.
I hope this helps you out a little bit,
Nosferatu

I personally think you're already on your way, if not able to be considered so. You're starting out gradually, so that's good.
And cool musical tase, by the way

Thanks for the encouragement.
I have read 'What Gothic Is and Is Not', and it was helpful.
I believe that I understand what Gothic is about, it's finding out whether it's for me that has had me perplexed.
I have been reading all of the topics, posts and replies for the last couple of days and it is all very interesting to me.
I feel comfortable here, like I might belong.
I am the only 'Gothic' type person in my town and the nearest goth club is about 80 miles away. I don't get out much so it has taken me awhile to find what is 'me'.
I spend most of my time online researching anything and everything gothic because it intrigues me.
I hope I can learn from this site and grow into my existence, whatever it may be.
Truly and lovingly,
lizbeth

As mentioned by others, you sound like you're on the right track. It's good to see people researching what it is they're "getting in to". I think the GOTH.NET Links section should give you plenty of links to work with for the time being
If you come across links not on the site or anything broken, let me know!
Hi by the way

Remember, the truest test of being a goth is that you don't call yourself one. Don't think, just do But seriously, if you make it a conscious decision, then it's not really you. Just be yourself, do the things that interest you, hang out with the people you like, and forget about calling yourself one thing or another.

Actually, I've never called myself one or considered myself one. My high school classmates(back in those days) called me things like "hey goth girl", or "you look so goth". I always responded to them with things like "I'm not goth, I just like to dress this way" or after a while it got annoying so I would just say "no I'm not" when people would say that. I just ignore it now. I don't care so much anymore.
I live in a town of 1,119 people and I'm the only person there that stands out. I get dirty looks, get called things like 'freak', 'hey it's that weird girl', and other things.
No one would date me, they would instead ask me freaky sex questions as if I was some kinky sex freak just because of the way I dressed and I dress very conservatively(long dresses and such) I don't like to let things show. I blame television for that. :S Maybe it was the leather...
I have very few friends because of the way I am. There are just alot of no nonsense redneck types here. They don't want me to screw up their nice-little-happy-sunday barbecue- chicken farming-cow sh*t-town. ;P They've told me such things. My high school principal would tell me to go home and not come back to class until I put on 'normal' clothes because I was a distraction to the other students.
I don't mean for this to go on so long. I guess I'm just letting off steam from my unhappy teen years. I'm not retaliating to your statement in anger if it seems that way. I'm really very nice. Ask my 4 friends.
I just feel that the gothic subculture is something I've fallen into and now more than ever. Even if I'm the only one within 70 miles. I guess it's just where I ended up after being rejected by local society and their standards of what someone should be, do, say, wear, etc...

No, actually, i feel your pain. I think we all do. I was just trying to say i'm sure you'll be welcome here. You don't have to make any particular effort to fit in if you just be yourself.

Chicago is a great place to be goth. There is every type of person here, and in mass quantities. Hahahaha Go chicago. *ducks stone* No offense to the small towners!
Also, do not despair about the small numbers of friends ( If you are). Just know that they are the best ones you could have. The typical brainwashed idiot= 1/1 millionth of any goth out there. Good luck with that.
