It would be kind of hard to get Danny Elfman music in a Stephen Sondheim musical.

Oh I understand that now. This was also before I knew that it was a musical previously created. I honestly thought that Tim Burton created it. XD

Ah, well, that makes slightly more sense then. They DO work together an awful lot, don't they?

Yeah they do. Despite that, I don't know it was kind of refreshing to see something different in that aspect.

I went and saw it last night. It was hilarious. And hey how come nobody mentioned Sacha Baron Cohen was in it? That was a great surprise and he was absolutely ridiculous (in a good way). I didn't really mind Helena Bonham Carter's singing - I thought it worked well enough with Depp's and for the character. And honestly, who plays deranged women in a corsets better? The Joanna bit was annoying (startling cleavage and all) but necessary I suppose, and even though it was wonderfully over the top (the theatre was packed and people were laughing out loud), it wasn't without emotional impact either. I'd definitely recommend it.
And how 'bout Johnny Depp at the seaside? WANT!

I just wanted to add one thought to all of this discussion:
If you liked this movie (I mean the story and the music, if you're just there for Depp, then ignore me) then make it a point to actually see the stage show.
Not only does it REALLY help to patronize the arts, but it is still one hell of an awesome show. Also, you have no idea how much fun music you are actually missing. They cut a lot. I'm not blaming Burton for that, that's what you have to do to transfer to the screen. I'm just saying that, for example, the "It's Priest" song has another couple of verses and they're at least as good.

It's all true. The opening theme is also kind of epic...though I can see why Burton didn't want to include it in the film.
Also, if you get the opportunity, check out a recording of the show from back in the 70's with Angela Lansbury and George Hearns. Lansbury does a superb job as Mrs. Lovett...frankly, I prefer her singing. Hearns is...if not better than Johnny Depp, at least different.

As far as I know, the musical hasn't been performed here in Australia but it would be nice if the movie became a reason for the actual musical to be staged (yes it might do the opposite, but I'm hoping). I'd love to see it.
Oh and Threnody, thanks for the tip. The uni library has it! And quite a number of other entries under Sweeney Todd...hmm.

Actually, he did want to include it. "The Ballad of Sweeney Todd" was all set to be a major piece performed at the beginning of the film, sung by narrator ghosts such as Christopher Lee and "Buffy's" Anthony Stewart Head (who still has a small role in the existing film). The sequence was scrapped when schedule complications arose due to Depp's child falling ill. From what I understand, everyone in the production was very disappointed that the sequence didn't make it into the film, because it was going to be really fun.
Oh, well, it was still a cool flick.
~Nachty, always pissed to miss out on Christopher Lee~

I just got back from the movies after seeing this flick!
I loved it! The girl (Ms. Lovett) is THE most beautiful thing I've seen in a film since the fallen star-girl in Stardust. Booyah! Dunno, maybe I got a wierd taste in women
There was me, my girlfriend, my best friend and his girlfriend that went to see it and no one was dissapointed! I think it rocked. It's late now and I need to get a bed so at the moment I won't provide more of an in-depth analysis of the movie.
Deal with it

ShadowCrow, I know the feeling.
I loved the movie so much, yet don't really know what to say about it.
Except, the tunes are definitely catchy! I found myself downloading a couple particulars after seeing the movie with xXShadowXx. Especially "A Little Priest"! That song had us laughing so much. And we definitely felt like belting out the Epiphany song. "They all deserve to die!".
But yes, an excellent movie!

The whole movie for me was wondrous. I loved it way more than I actually thought. I adore the costumes as well.
I loved the theatrical costumes and theatrical movements of the characters. I felt they had a lot of emotion.

Loved every second of it. This is one of Burton's best films for me, eclipsed only by Ed Wood.

Re: Sweeney Todd - New Tim Burton - Johnny Depp movie
To be honest, I didn't really enjoy the movie much. It had a few great scores (particularly the one with the 'priest pie' haha), Helena Bonham Carter (who I adore) did look gorgeous, and it was also visually appealing, but the plot, the mini-love stories, and that darn 'Pretty Girl' song just didn't do it for me. I'd probably enjoy it more on mute (except for the pie song)..
Did anyone see Tim Burton's short 'Vincent', narrated by Vincent Price? It's fantastic, and you can watch it on youtube (if memory serves).
Despite not really caring too much for Tim Burton's recent projects, I still look forward to seeing the rumored Alice in Wonderland. =^^=
