 Golden Compass
The first adaption of the Philip Pullman trilogy is out!
Although I'm sure quite of a few of us have already seen it, here's the film's official site: http://www.goldencompassmovie.com
I still personally think it was quite a disappointment as a remake of the book, but as a stand alone fantasy action film, it was pretty decent. What does everyone else think?
And remember guys, there's already a thread in the politics section about the religious aspects of the film!

 Re: Golden Compass
I didn't read the book, but I watched the movie. It was quite a dissapointment actually, I felt like I was waiting for something to happen the whole movie. I don't know, maybe it follows the book and this was just the prologue, but movie as a movie, I didn't like it at all.

I found it ok, I can't believe it bet transformers at the oscars for visual effects..RRRRRRRRR Read the book. The fact that in the US the book is being renamed from "the Northern Lights" to "the Golden Compass" is really annoying me. A film should not set precedence for a book just because too many people are fucking lazy and won't read.

It's been out for over ten years under that title.

A film should not set precedence for a book just because too many people are fucking lazy and won't read. Even if the author and publisher did change the title of The Northern Lights to match the movie in an attempt to get more kids to read the original novel, I wouldn't have a problem with that. The thing that annoys me is that creative types are so often accused of selling out every time they take steps to capitalize on their art. Are there folks who don't want any kind of consumerism or capitalism "tainting" their creations? Absolutely. And while that's a fine and lofty position to take, you'll notice most of those who take it are either already making enough money to live comfortably, or have a day job, or are folks that have dropped out of mainstream society all together. The vast majority of those who create (there are more people who make art than get paid for it) would like to be able to support themselves with their talents, so that they can continue creating. We don't live in a society where there are rich and royal patrons of art who dole out living expenses and booze money to poets they like. No sir. These days if you want to make a living, that means advertising, promoting and merchandising most times. Is it a perfect system? Fuck no! God, take a look at the Harry Potter merchandizing orgy that accompanied each book. But, like it or not, we're a consumerist society, we're all consumers, and if we want our writers to have the money to keep on writing, then we're going to have to endure uninspired film adaptations and unattractive "Golden Compass" happy meal toys. ~ LadyA, who would love to be given a chance to "sell out" and make a living off her comic

Touché I can't deny that it's all flawed and we'd all sell out if we could. I'm just very protective of books, and that, makes me feel very pathetic having said it.

 Re: Golden Compass
Don't think of it as selling out, think of it as buying in. Unless you are very, very lucky or very, very sheltered, you find out very quickly as an artist the realities of being a creator.

 Re: Golden Compass
the book is 100 percent better. The movie, i think, was only showing random parts of the book in chronological order. It was only giving us every other peice of the puzzle (or story in this case) leaving it confusing. The book on the other hand is wonderful. I think the problem was they tried to cram to much story in too little time.
