Okay, I just read a few pages of a book on Amazon in a book titled "What Is Goth?" by Voltaire and they explain three different Goth types, RomantiGoth, DeathRocker, CyberGoth. I also searched to see if this had been posted in a previous thread finding only similarities, therefore, including the dictionary on this site and any other Goth types you know of, write which type you think you are and justify briefly.

I'm still new to Goth so I still ain't figured out... maybe I shall learn?

I'm the type that thinks even further pidgeonholing of oneself is rather silly. This is justified by being too old to care.

I overlap them all really (except cybergoth). I'm into too many different things to pigeonhole myself like that. I listen to different types of music depending on my mood as with other things like what I read and wear. I don't believe in restricting myself to one thing. I could never understand people who say things like "Oh I can't possibly listen to that, it's got guitars in it therefore it must be shit." *rolls eyes* I can listen to goth, punk, deathrock, New Romantic and industrial as well as many other genres. I don't really prefer one over the other. I like to listen to new things all the time. I really can't stand the mindset that you can only listen to one type of music like metal or goth or whatever.

Btw if you ever get to read 'What is Goth?' offline you'll find he goes onto describe several more types including punk, rivethead, ethereal goth, gothabilly, candy goth and vampires.

I'm too old to characterize myself to fit into some form that I hope people will think is cool. If you don't like me for who I am, though shit, but I don't have time for you anyway.

I cross over into all the categories, that said, I don't like being categorised. I don't even really call myself a goth, though I certainly fit the description. I like all kinds of music: industrial; (a little bit of) hop hop; gothic; classic rock; punk; ethereal; old pop; deathrock; and many more. The same with my taste in books.

When it comes to fashion, I wear EGL, cyber, romantic goth, classic goth, corp goth, and pretty much whatever strange cominations I can think of. It's better to just be yourself and be creative then try to fit into a certain category.

I don't really fit into any category, in either to do with music, fashion, lifestyle etc. It mostly depends on my mood and the occassion.

Judging by all the responses to this thread, it appears that one of the defining characteristics of 'goth' may be a refusal to let oneself be further characterized. It's kinda interesting- the more we try to be different, the more we stay the same...

That being said, I too feel that these sub-subcultures are kinda silly. It seems to me that if one were to fit very well into any one of those categories, they would not be a very interesting person to hang out with. People are usually more complex than any of that...

Hi again, thanks so far, I'm almost certain there will be further replies.

I really understand the whole pigeonhole experience thing and also agree that categorising is quite pathetic.... I only hoped to learn from others who are entwined in the subculture... which many of you have done.

I understand that there are further categories and labels that have further divided the Goths of the world and I wonder that it is just ways of getting around the variations.

I personally disagree with having to place different people into there respective pigeonholes but that's life.

no one can ever figure out what I am... I look like Peter Murphy (scary resemblace) from his Bauhaus days... I'm a huge Peter Murphy fan and freaked out when I saw some pictures of him, so I try to find a name for his goth genre.

I believe that's post-punk and goth rock.

Don't worry too much about it, the "Goth Types" are more of a joke than anything.

Of course, in some cases, it might be less a case of refusal and more a case of not having time to think, much less worry, about it.

Personally, I don't classify myself as anything but me. But, if you wanted to try, some people might call me a Weekend Goth or a Corporate Goth because, let's face it, I don't don the regalia unless I have an event -- and those are few and far between here.

If I wanted to be creative and make up my own category, I'd call it Artsy Goth. Outside of my actual job, I spend 99% of time doing theatre things, writing, or socializing with artsy type people.

If I *had* to categorize myself, I'd say romanti-goth. I love period-looking clothing and anything historical. But I don't wear a corset to go to class or the grocery store--a lot of times, I'm just in a (usually black) shirt and blue jeans. I usually get more "gothed up" if I have the time and energy to put into it.
But judging by some of the music I listen to, I could be described as a metalhead and not goth at all. It's silly to categorize yourself or others, but apparently it's of help to some people in order to give descriptions.

I don't really call myself "goth" too often. That being said, if I were to categorize myself, I would probably fall under the hippie-goth, romanti-goth or glam-goth. That probably only makes sense to me...
