My colouring is similar to LadyA's, and certain dyes don't work on me. I did blue once, in college, but it didn't work and I bleached it back out. I've done bleach-blonde, but that made me look like I'd fallen in a vat of chlorine. In other words, the colour was too similar to my skin and it looked strange. Also, pure black doesn't look good on my head, due to my skin tone. Well, that and my eyebrows are barely visible as it is; I'd be drawing them in every single day with black pencil, which would look wrong I think. So, I can totally see where dying it black could make you look too pale. Imagine an elderly lady you've surely seen who continues to dye her hair a dark colour long after she's gone totally grey and it's just not working.
I'm sure your salon has helped you out by now, but as a general comment on hair colouring, pure black doesn't work on everyone for a reason and it has a lot to do with your genes. Don't fight it just to be more "goth" or you'll just look silly instead of elegant.

I've done my hair (naturally blond) a number of colors, mostly reds and a reddish purple. One time, however, I took a wrong turn and my hair was black with blue streaks. I loved the colors... but not on me X). I'm siding with the people who have said that no, black hair does not go with everything. Right now I have some gorgeous reds and blonds in my hair, and it almost looks natural. Unfortunately, from my mother's perspective, I love outlandish hair colors and I want to go 'sonic green' sometime in the future. The lovely lady is willing to let me, but I've been getting increasingly worried about the blue green I want to go with due to negative comments on green. Would anyone expound on why their green didn't turn out well?

Mercury, if you look good in reds and purples, I'm going to assume that like me you have a ruddy hue to your skin tone. You might want to rethink green as an all-over color because of two words: complimentary colors.
When my hair was green, I looked sickly and yellowish all the time. Remember, your hair color is going to reflect off your skin. Never dye your hair a shade you wouldn't wear, because it looks unflattering on you.
If you suspect lime locks might not be the best route for your hair, but are in love with the color, think about dying streaks in your hair instead and use something more neutral like blonde for the rest of your tresses. When my hair was long, I used to bleach streaks in the front and dye "stripes" of color in those. Because I kept the blonde close to my face, and the rest its natural shade, I was able to get away with a few colors that would have looked awful on me (like black) if I had dyed the entirety of my head.

Thank you miLady Attercop, I really appreciate your input. I had the sickly look going when my hair was black, and it's not something I'd care to repeat.

My natural hair is a honey color, I love it, but I love my violet hair with black streaks even better. I'm thinking of going for black on top, and bright purple underneath. I don't want to do all black, thats too boring.

My natural hair colour is a light to dark brown depending on how much time I spend outside (when I am back home - in africa - it goes a very light mousey brown and yet when I am home in the uk it has gone a dark brown). Currently I have blonde, copper and pink streaks in it, and it looks rather natural even if slightly orange to me. But I quite like it. I went black not so long ago and I don't think it suited me that much as I have olive tanned skin. So mayhaps I will have to stick with the gentler colours. But I would like to go black and red someday.. but I don't know if I could pull it off. We shall see....

I too am very very pale. My natural hair color is a dark brown, but I've been dying it various shades of red for the past few years. It's run the gammut from strawberry blonde to burgundy-purple. Trouble is, I've dyed it so much that my ends don't hold color so well anymore.
I've contemplated going black, but I guess it wouldn't look good with my coloring, especially since I wear mostly black. However, I'm thinking of doing it temporarily for Halloween since I'm dressing as Bettie Page. Does anyone know of any decent temporary black dyes? The only one I've really seen is the L'Oreal Color Pulse in blue-black and even that takes 8-10 shampoos to get out.

Be careful dying hair blue! It can make your skin look really weird! Having said that, mine is a very dark purple now, and I absolutely love it!

My hair has been several colors over the years:
When I had braids that came nearly to my hips, they were naturally red on black (a very cool natural coloring, my mother has it too). When it fell out and regrew to only touch just above the middle of my shoulder blades, it gave me a Demona look, and when I decided to become Gothic, I went over to a friend's house and dyed the red blue, so now it's blue on black and sticks out as though it's been flying on the wind - and it has when I leave it down.
I agree with being careful about dying blue; the first attempt made me look like I'd been hit by a bus with these funny bruise-like patterns over my neck and shoulders, and as you know, blue turns up as a very funny color on the brown-skinned... ???

But I want to look uber goth! :p
Nah, I'd definitely prefer to have a nice, elegant look. Something that suits me, even if it's not all that exciting. That being said, I think I've spent too much time contemplating going black. It's kinda now or never-ish for me. I think I'm getting to the age I'll start to look silly experimenting with crazy colours, so I better get it out of my system while I still feel it's appropriate.

I sprayed my hair black today and most people thought I looked REALLY good with it. That might convince my mom that I wont look that bad. well I do not really want black hair. I want dark brown. Here I go to convince. Wish me luck for I will truly need it:D
