If you look harder you'll see Oompa Loompas in the trailer. And if you read through this thread you'd see that links to pictures of Oompa Loompas have already been posted. I even mentioned this in my post that you quoted. There's even at least one picture of them in the screencaps that have also been posted in this thread. Did you even bother reading this thread or did you just skim it and expect people to repeat themselves for you because you couldn't be bothered finding out for yourself? ;P

A UK Teaser Trailer has now been released, it's pretty much the same as the US one except the eagle-eyed among you may notice one or two extra clips in the trailer (and they're very quick too so it's a blink and miss thing). The trailer on this page is larger than the other one so you can see things more clearly, but the colour is very dodgy.

The first picture of one of the playsets is available now. There are a few different 6" action figures plus playsets been made.

In an interview, Mr Depp said that he was studying his friend, Marilyn Manson, as the basis for the role, so expect the character to be very dark.

New screencaps have been added to the collective. If you look you'll see that in Burton's version they've kept true to the book by having Veruca Salt final scene being with squirrels, unlike the 70s version which had her wanting the geese that lay golden eggs.

A variety of posters are now available to buy, that feature different characters and designs and are pretty good.

I am so excited for this movie, the colors, the sets the charaters look amazing! I want to try and see it in the Imax by me

Just saw this little brief mention of Gene Wilder's opinions on the new film in the Metro today:

When I heard they were making this, I hoped and prayed they'd get Tim Burton to direct...am so glad they did. He'll keep the tone of the book instead of going into major fluffyness (and BTW, I was creeped out by the first movie..eergh).

Can't wait for it to come out, may have to skip work that day...and Mr Depp is looking scrumtious, heh heh heh:p

Anyone else getting the Sam Rockwell vibe off Johnny Depp from some of the snippets in the current trailers? Not necessarily off his whole performance, but from a few moments in the trailer where he's being a bit dim.

It's those super straight teeth, the plastic-y looks and the goofishness... it reminds me of Sam as Zaphod in HHGTTG.

Given that I've just returned from a screening of "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," I think it appropriate to put forth my own humble review. Be advised; the spoiler alert is now in effect.

Let me start by stating that it's been years since I've seen the previous "Charlie & the Chocolate Factory" film and even longer since I've read the book -- possibly 20 years or more for the latter -- so forgive me if my memory is a bit cloudy on those matters. I also made it a point not to research this version too much before screening it and viewed the trailer only one time -- when this thread first began.

Visually, this film is stunning. From the opening credits, it is clear that this isn't the Chocolate Factory of old. They are darker, void of magic -- yet in a magical way -- and give the absolute perfect impression -- especially when paired with the music of Danny Elfman -- that a journey is just beginning -- a journey that is both creepy and beautiful at the same time. Tim Burton's distinctive style is seen throughout, particularly within the Bucket household and in the candy garden. If you recall, the visuals in "The Nightmare Before Christmas" -- and in the trailer for "The Corpse Bride" -- many things are created with quaint-yet-creepy dips and curls and points. Much of this is seen in the candy garden, and the entirety of the Bucket household is such. I also felt that the coloration of the factory's exterior was a good choice. As I recall, the factory's exterior in the previous version was quite colorful (though I could be wrong). Burton's factory is quite void of color -- being a dingy gray-black in it's later "run-down" years and a crisp white in it's "opening" years. In fact, the first sign of color for the factory is Wonka's introduction, and even then, the signs of age are beautifully apparent.

The film is also wonderfully acted. Depp is, of course, the quintessential Wonka. His use of facial expression, movement, tone, and space speaks of the wonderful actor he truly is. True to the script, his portrayal is that of a creepily troubled man who is a child at heart but has little understanding or tolerance of actual children. Honestly, when he was speaking to children, the tone he used made me laugh because it is the exact tone I hear in my mind when I read Lunamoth telling someone around here, "Don't be stupid, 'kay?" But that's a whole other story. Regardless, the portrayal is about as far from Gene Wilder's portrayal of the same character as it gets (which may be, in large part, due to the script as much as anything else) and completely nails the creepy factor while maintaining the lovable vulnerability factor.

The child actors are just what they usually are: child actors. They rather blend in and fail to stand out much at all. Nothing was extremely surprising, but the differences in the Mike Teavee character to update it were good choices. I also felt that the boy playing Charlie did a quite decent job of acting the part of a child who is extremely disappointed but doing his best not show it in the beginning.

The other shining star, acting-wise, is David Kelly as Grandpa Joe. I immediately loved him in the character, and his use of facial expression and physical comedy rivals that of Depp in this film -- though I doubt it would be noticable to many moviegoers. Of course, in my opinion, only a very good actor can portray a role perfectly without overshadowing others. Both Kelly & Depp accomplish this.

Script-wise, it's extremely obvious this film is a more faithful adaptation to Dahl's original work. More backstory exists for Wonka, Charlie's family plays a more prominent role, and the ending is a bit longer and less trite. Musically, Elfman was, as always, dead on. The score itself is eerily beautiful -- fitting with the film -- and the move of making each Oompa Loompa song completely different was a good one, keeping moviegoers from rolling their eyes thinking "not again..."

Other notes. The Oompa Loompas seem to get more priority screentime outside of their music in this version. Again, it's a good move and shows how important they really are. I also know that many fans have been concerned about the Oompa Loompas; they are not disappointing.

Also, as many of you may know, September will see the release of "Corpse Bride," another Tim Burton film with Johnny Depp acting credits. Look forward to it. Danny Elfman will complete what I consider to be the Holy Trinity of films and join Depp and Burton by composing the score. Helena Bonham Carter (Charlie's mother) will play The Corpse Bride. And, Deep Roy (the Oompa Loompa) and Christopher Lee (Wonka's father) will "appear" in "Corpse Bride" as well.

The bottom line? Burton + Depp + Elfman never disappoints and never fails to delight. The countdown to "Corpse Bride" begins.

I 'm glad you enjoyed it too Scarlet. I really enjoyed the extra character development surrounding Willy Wonka's relationship with his father. This sort of thing is easy to foul up and make into a cheese fest, but is so perfectly executed here. I always love it when movies anticipate questions you might have about the characters and answer them in a suitable way. Gene Wilder played a more 'crazed scientist' sort of Wonka while Depp gives the character more Deppth (bad pun sorry) and humanity. i don't recall any of that being in the book, i could be wrong, but i think this is something that Burton included , much to his credit.
I also found the ending more fulfilling than that of "willy wonka" and it was cool to see how all the other children emerge from the chocolate factory warped or changed in some way either major or minor.
All in all, everything about "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" is better than "Willy Wonka" in all the right ways.
definately , along with Batman, one of the two must-see movies of the summer.

"Charlie and Chocate Factory" is very Burtony in all its neo-caligari glory.
I think I may need to see this film again to propperly gague my oppinion on the film.

I never really caught onto the Willy Wonka craze, and indeed I haven't actually seen the 70's movie in its entirety.

My main comment for the moment is that for once, i'm not particularly keen on on Johnny Depp's performance... It never felt believable or settled into where it wanted to be.. the voice annoyed me from the start.
There have been a number of comparisons with Depp's Wonka being Michael Jacksonesque, and I'm inclined to agrea....

Nice clothes.... bad haircut though...

I think going a more Gene Wilder approach with a touch of Monk might have gotten a better result.
Dahl in the book describes Wonka as "An extraordinary little man in black top hat, tail coat of plum-colored velvet, trousers of bottle green and pearly gray gloves. He carries a gold-topped walking cane, has twinkling eyes and black goatee"... Pity they left out the facial hair as Depp seems to sport a goatee well... but with that description; I think Tony Shalhoub would have been a better candidate for the role, even if he doesn't elicit the cries of lust that Depp gets from the general viewing public.

A note about Depp's Willy Wonka:

According to Depp, his Wonka is less Jackson and more Sunday morning kid's show. He benchmarked Wonka's voice pitch and pattern from Mr. Rogers, and watching the film with that in mind, I think he hit it pretty dead on. And, it kept me cracking up the entire film. "Even I'm eatable. But, that would be cannibalism ..." (Mr. Rogers always struck me as kinda creepy.) The hair and jacket were designed to be reminiscent of Capt. Kangaroo. (Any one on here old enough to remember him will be slapping their foreheads going, "Oh yeah!" I know I did.)

What I want to know is if there was some ulterior social commentary going on with Willy Wonka? Here you have a guy that looks like a kid's show host, makes candy for a living, and by all appearances would be the perfect person to trust your children too. Yet in reality, he hates kids, is emotionally queer and distant, and is about the last guy on earth with whom you should leave any child.

To me, that sounds more like Michael Jackson than the voice or wardrobe.
