That's an interesting theory. But if it's true than wheer as all the signs of the 'great civilisation' gone? Have they been mixed up with other pieces? I mean if Ireland was the great Atlantis wouldn't there be signs of building remains or something? ???

It mentions some of the ancient Irish ruins which predate the egyptian civilisation....but these ruins fantastic and advanced in design as they are...also predate the greek civilisation. That is of course if I'm remebering correctly, Irish History classes were a long time ago. However seeing as how Plato refers to Atlantis as a civilisation which existed while he lived and which he visited in his life-time, the fact that these buildings were already ancient ruins by the time he was born puts a lot of doubt on the theory.
Personally I believe it was all in his head.

Well, perhaps he went to Ireland, saw the ruins and was inspired to create the story? In which case, Ireland would still be Atlantis, just not the way one would think.
It's just an idea that popped into my head...

Atlantis has been transformed into an Irish themed park, full of exciting rides such as the "Traffic Jam" and the "Bus Ride", with many shops with laughably overpriced stock.

I like to think that Atlantis is Crete; the Minoan Civilisation.
Plato was said to have told the tale and it was written by ancient eygptian scribes who (being in eygpt and not getting out much) got it wrong and the proximity was actually alot closer than the described place:Atlantic ocean.....
Damn i wish i had of studied archeology...i always found this stuff fascinating.
They actually have proof by uncovering the lost cities of crete, by the paintings of the murals and brick work.
And Irish Ancient history is fascinating too... the paganism and druids

Come to think of it, most of the ruins that exist today, were buried under the ground, Plato wouldnt have seen any of them, we only see them today as they have been carefully excavated within the last two centuries.
Newgrange Included.

Like I said, just an idea. *shrugs*
Is it just me or does someone seem to find Atlantis about once a month?

Actually I remember seeing on T.V. that they discovered atlantis that was CLOSE to Ireland, but not quite. So if that's true does that make me part Atlantean? Heh...

Actually the show I saw was based on Plato's writings, and using his obscure references they found an underwater civilisation that matched his description. I believe they said in the Mediterranean sea.
