Post Re: The Veg Thread
If anyone is ever in the Chicago area, you have to try Karyn's over on Halsted. It's not just vegan - it's a raw food restaurant. I have a friend that is doing a detox in preparation for veganism, which consists of a 100% raw food diet. We were going out so I figured what the heck, I'll try a raw food restaurant, otherwise she'd not really be able to eat anywhere. That place is absolutely delish! I had veggies tossed in curry sauce that was absolutely wonderful. I had curry "ice cream" for dessert which was pretty good. My friend had a tiramisu. Now, I don't know what that stuff was made with, but I never would have guessed it was vegan. It tasted just like chocolate, and while it was rich, it was not TOO intense.

It is a bit on the pricey side, that's the only downside. Perhaps skip the drinks (I had a "mint julip") and just have water.

Here's the site in case anyone wants to check it out http://www.karynraw.com/Raw-Cafe/

Sounds interesting! But... This I don't get. She says she's vegan, yet her Gourmet/Brunch menu includes cheese?

It was a bit confusing - I think she actually has two separate places (because I saw there was another one on Wells, which is also where the cooked food was I believe). So she may be catering to vegetarians as well? But the place I went to in particular was 100% raw vegan.

The brunch appears to be at the same location I was at, but I don't think it was in the same part - there was a separate part next to it where you could tell the buffet would go. I will have to investigate one day, as now I'm curious.

I wouldn't be surprised if gays turnip at the parade.

I'm surprised the Pun Police didn't lock you up for that. Meanwhile, let's all try to visualize whirled peas.

I've just discovered The Extreme Bean as a great snack, and had to mention it here!

The product comes from Canada, and it's hot and spicy, pickled raw string beans. They're crunchy and really delicious! I think I'm addicted to pickled string beans!

Three beans (a serving size) have only 10 calories. Here's more info. I have to try the company's other products now.

They sound really tasty... shame they are only available in North America or Canada :(

Oh, I didn't realize they weren't available overseas. Sorry, Minty!

On another note...

For vegetarians/vegans here who may be feeling a bit glum because most of the cool animals are carnivores, here's news of a newly discovered, saber-toothed vegetarian prehistoric reptile:

Quote:
Teeth like sabers might ordinarily conjure images of fearsome extinct predators, but now researchers have revealed the earliest giant-fanged plant-eater known, a beast the size of a large dog that once munched on leaves and stems in ancient Brazil.

However, just because this creature was a vegetarian does not mean it was harmless — its dagger teeth likely helped it deal with predators and rivals, scientists explained.

The newfound creature is named Tiarajudens eccentricus — "Tiarajú" after where it was found, "dens" is Latin for "tooth," and "eccentricus" for "eccentric." And this animal certainly was odd. In addition to the crayon-size saber canines, the entire roof of its mouth was covered with teeth.

Full article here.

I was always nuts for dinosaurs as a kid. Even though the eccentricus beastie is an ugly bastard, I think he's going to be my vegetarian mascot. :D

Post Re: The Veg Thread
Oh the dilemma! Some of us may be celebrating Passover Seder tonight, so what can vegetarians use to substitute for the traditional lamb's shankbone on the Seder plate? And what can vegans additionally substitute for the traditional hard-boiled egg on the Seder plate?

I did some searching, and found this:

Quote:
Although tradition calls for use of a shankbone to honor the sacrificial lamb, a red beet is scripturally permitted on the Seder plate -- in fact, it's common for even omnivores to use this substitution instead.

While the beitzah actually calls for a hard-boiled egg to symbolize fertility, try a silky avocado or a small, de-stemmed white eggplant.

Happy Passover!

Happy Passover to you, too, Nephele!

Maybe a digression, but... While I can see how an egg can be replaced by an avocado or an aubergine, I'm not quite getting the connection between the beet and the shankbone which makes the beet symbolically acceptable?
