Post Where to buy a dark faceplate?
Okay, I'm going nuts trying to find something online – or anywhere – for my home, so I'm hoping somebody here might be able to point me in the right direction.

It's a simple little thing, really. You'd think I should be able to find it.

What I need is a wood-grain faceplate for a dataline port in the wall of my house. I can find white faceplates everywhere – but nothing with a wood-grain finish to blend in with the wood paneling on my wall. The white one that my electrician just put in for me just looks garish standing out against the dark wood of the wall.

I can find dark and wood-grain faceplates for light switches and electrical outlets just fine. But not for a dataline port.

Has anybody ever seen one of these faceplates in anything other than a white finish? If so, do you know where in the heck I can get one?

If you fancy a bit of mess try painting it (http://painting.about.com/od/decorativepainting/ig/Decorative-Painting-Album/Tina-Boxes.htm) or wood effect adhesive plastic ('sticky backed plastic' for those of a certain age in the UK).

Thanks. I may eventually try that. Although I really would prefer one made of wood.

I have not seen any, some horrible beige colour was the best I found for RJ45 connections. :( How about some thin balsa wood stained and varnished? It should be easy to cut and glue a cover for the box. Maybe add some brass trim to punk' it up a bit.

Hmm... Might work. Thanks for the idea!

My thoughts were that the production of such an item would be limited due to the cutting procedures for mass production of wood...but then again, switchplates exist, and those have rectangular holes. There simply could be any demand for such a thing.

So...
you can get a blank and learn how to use a scroll saw, and then maybe sell enough plates to pay for your saw,
buy a black plastic cover if there is one,
buy a white one and cover it with wood-grain contact paper (oh so John Waters!),
try calling this place and see what they can do.

I've bookmarked the page and I'm going to call them Monday morning! Thanks!

So you're currently NOT considering the scroll-saw route. Oh well....

Have you tried a local carpenter or someone who makes (wooden) furniture? They might be able to make something for you. In the colour, texture, and measurements you need.
