So over the weekend, a 12 year old girl and a 23 year old man, who apparantly are dating, killed the girl's parents and brother. And since both the man and girl were users of VampireFreaks.com, the media is labeling them as goth and making it look bad on the subulture...yet again

for more information

This is a notice, of yet again, poking Goths as "serial killers". It even states in the article that youth in North America who are involved in the Goth scene are more than likely to commit crime.

And figuring that this is from Vampirefreaks.com (which the article also states that most of the users are on average 13 years), it's just another step to cower the public into believing everything literally.

It was probably bound to happen.

Apparently only Goth's or those in North America get involved in serious crime.

Oh, of course SV_Harlequin. Goths on other continents never cause any trouble, nor do older North American goths or youth living in North America not involved in the gothic subculture. And, North American gothic youth only get involved in serious crimes--no jaywalking gothic minors around here.

Seriously, this has got to be a lazy journalist's wet dream. It's got 100% of your daily dose of sensationalism built right in. Everything you need to keep people preoccupied with inconsequential bullshit so that you don't have to work on those "hard" stories that require detailed research or insight.

There was a story run in the paper yesterday about how not all goths are bad. It quoted the 'doctors and lawyers' article we discussed a few weeks back, and had quotes from people who said they never had any desire to ever harm anyone else or themselves.

Just wanted to say that not all journalists and media are bad. Just like how not all 'goth' kids are bad :) .

At work there was a group of teenagers in, a typical group that wore mostly black, and one of them kept ragging on his friend that he wore black all the time, that he looked like he was going to a funeral. The other kids kept asking him what was wrong with black, but he wouldn't give a real answer. Interestingly enough, he was the biggest dick of the group; the other kids were quite polite. Funny how I was dressed in all black too. I figure is attitude was based much on this story.

And I'm dead curious as to what the fuck is up with Medicine Hat. That's where the Columbine copycat killed that student in 1999. I mean, the crimes that happen here at schools in the city aren't ever perpetrated by 'goths'.

jenny: are you sure you're not thinking of the killing done in Taber? that was done shortly after columbine, and was supposed to have been influenced by it (though, from what i gather, the kid ended up killing the other one kinda by accident - the dork went and brought a gun to school to try to scare people, but shot it accidentally when he got nervous). and, while people were shockingly saying "oh no, another goth killing!" it was proved shortly after that the kid wasnt even wearing dark clothes at all... was just wearing the type of stuff most other kids wore.

A very similar, close encounter, like the one in the article above, already happened in Long Island, near New York City.

Whatever runs red on paper is read the most.

The media loves making stories exciting by make false or unreliable connections. I'm not surprised at all that they leaped at this opportunity.

Ah yes, my mistake. I had a friend from school move to Medicine Hat for a year, then to Taber just before that happened. Left me a little confused I suppose.

I couldn't edit, but holy shit the Globe and Mail are fucking irresponsible when it comes to reporting. It's illegal to identify the guilty teen, but then they print her parents and brother's names? That's going to identify her easily. The sources I've seen said they would not release the victims names in compliance with the youth criminal justice act. I'm shocked.

sigh. i wonder why people are like that. and just because we're goths doesn't mean we would run around killing our family right? i think that the bf forced her to do it or sth. and anyway, i'm not from america and there aren't many goths here but things like that murder case happens frequently. i hate people who are so prejudiced against goths.

What the fuck is "sth"? Please spell out your words completely.

And don't resurrect several-months-old threads if you aren't going to add anything new, other than your opinion.
