Re: Baptist Preacher Calls For BEATING THE GAY Out Of Childr
Sean Harris' vile sermon was a response to North Carolina's upcoming vote on Amendment 1 to their State Constitution. Harris also urged his followers during this sermon to vote for this amendment. The vote is being taken this Tuesday (May 8th) in the North Carolina primary vote, and passage of Amendment 1 will constitutionally ban marriage equality in that state. This amendment is being supported by Republican Newt Gingrich. Our Democratic president, Barack Obama, has publically come out against this proposed amendment. As stated by Obama's North Carolina campaign spokesman Cameron French: "...the record is clear that the president has long opposed divisive and discriminatory efforts to deny rights and benefits to same-sex couples. That's what the North Carolina ballot initiative would do – it would single out and discriminate against committed gay and lesbian couples – and that's why the president does not support it." Amendment 1 a.k.a. Bill 514 (2011) was sponsored by Republican Senator Peter S. Brunstetter. In another topic on this board there is a discussion regarding whether or not the GOP has become an "apocalyptic cult." While I don't care much for either of our two major political parties – Republican or Democrat – I find myself agreeing with Spidey's assertion that it is the Republican party which is too often allowing religious fundamentalists to steer their course. But back to Sean Harris... Yes, I definitely think that child advocacy groups need to be contacted regarding Harris' call from the pulpit for parents to abuse their children. I otherwise think that Harris and others like him can believe in whatever fundie stuff they please -- but when it turns into a call for violence against others, especially when it turns into a call for violence against helpless children, then it's time for Harris and others like him to be seriously reined in. Sean Harris wrote: Can I make it any clearer? Dads, the second you see your son dropping the limp wrist, you walk over there and crack that wrist. Man up. Give him a good punch. Ok? -- Nephele

Re: Baptist Preacher Calls For BEATING THE GAY Out Of Childr
That is very sick. Being a part of that community myself it sends shivers through me that people think these things. It is awful to think that people who are suppose to preach on peace would instead preach for parents to hurt their children. I can only hope that Mr. Harris never has a LGBTQI child, for the child's sake. This is the reason I'm not fond of Dr. James Dobson. He teaches parents to exile, ignore, and pretend the child is not LGBTQI and (from what I have heard encourages institutions that 'rid' the person of their 'gayness'. I find things like this to be ridiculous and this is also why I have boycotted Chic-Fli-A, because they support messages like this and give money to these causes that hinder and hurt LGBTQI people. It is a shame that people would hurt a child because of their sexuality. Powerful Picture, Powerful Message

I can't even read the article because it will just end up making me incredibly angry! Just the quote that Nephele posted disgusts me beyond words! People like him need to not exist. I'm not advocating killing him, I just wish people like him would cease to exist. I find the things that people like him have the temerity to say vile, and they need to shut up about things that are none of their damn business already

Re: Baptist Preacher Calls For BEATING THE GAY Out Of Childr
More from staticman: Quote: Update: Pastor Sean Harris: I'm Sorry That You Were Offended When I Said Kids Should Have The Gay Beaten Out Of Them Earlier today Deo on page 4 posted a news report which quoted Pastor Sean Harris as saying that he was only joking when he told his congregation that they should beat the gay out of non-gender conforming children. Harris has now posted a lengthy "official statement of retraction" on his personal blog. But as is typical with his repulsive ilk, he isn't actually sorry at all. Quote: I do not apologize for the manner in which the Word of God articulates sexual immorality, including homosexuality and effeminacy, as a behavior that is an abomination to God. Nothing in this official statement of retraction should be perceived as an apology for the overarching intent and message of the sermon and the need to define marriage as one man and one woman and to maintain the gender distinctions that God created from the beginning when He made them male and female (Genesis 1). I recognize that there are those in the LGBT community who believe that their sexual behavior is not sin. I do not agree with them and this official retraction should not be misunderstood as an apology for the gospel of Jesus Christ or the Word of God. I do not apologize for the manner in which I emphasized the importance of one man and one woman getting married and staying married for the benefit of their children and society. Not incidentally, we should all give props to Good As You activist Jeremy Hooper for once again overturning another stone of Christian Love™ to reveal the squirming maggots beneath. Thanks to Hooper (and you), Pastor Harris has been denounced and shamed across North Carolina. Harris clearly doesn't care, but hopefully the next preacher will think twice before he sends a young congregant reaching for the razor blades.

Neal Broverman for Advocate.com wrote: Maybe more frightening than Harris's shrieks for violence against children who don't conform to society's gender roles is the fact that his church runs a school, from kindergarten to high school, that graduated 18 students last year. Article here.I think that Sean Harris and his church need to be investigated. And if Sean Harris is sorry for anything, it's going to be for drawing public attention to his depravity. -- Nephele

What is it about Christian preachers and kids? They should know by now just to stay quiet.

Re: Baptist Preacher Calls For BEATING THE GAY Out Of Childr
They talked about this on every cable news network tonight (including CNN). Hearing the audio, and watching the video is much more chilling than just hearing quotes. This man was screaming because he was so upset. I would be very, very frightened if I was a gay child in the audience. Especially if my parents already suspected that I was gay. Hell, I'd even be scared to go home if I was a tom boy. According to this preacher, he said that parents need to get on their butch daughter's cases, too. I felt so bad when I saw that, and wondered how many children were hit or yelled at that night because of what their parents heard in church.

Re: Baptist Preacher Calls For BEATING THE GAY Out Of Childr
It doesn't stop there folks.
This church is quite close to a cult.
You see, one does not simply enter this church and walk into a sermon, no.
Berean Baptist has a distinctive "cult" atmosphere. For instance, you cannot just join. You have to sign up (and pay for) Sam Harris' 8 week pre-membership registration course called "First Class", then there's a registration fee before admittance. So in essence they either reject the outliers or train them in with Bible Bootcamp before they're even allowed to attend the church itself. Reading all of that about the "First Class" is sort of horrifying. But it does create an inner power circle of control over members and allows in only members who are absolutely compliant.

I am terrified for the children in this man's "church," they will live in fear. The pain they must go through when they are older and thinking about sexuality and discovering themselves. Not to mention the amount of time the ones that are gay will spend hating themselves and begging God to fix something that isn't something that needs to be fixed. It reminds me of what I went through with myself when I was struggling with the years of programming I went through. The environment those children are in breaks my heart in the deepest way.

Probably they will produce a lot of gay masochists, when they try to beat out homosexuallity out of the kids. People like this preacher man will never understand the complexity of the human mind.

Re: Baptist Preacher Calls For BEATING THE GAY Out Of Childr
Kinda proves my sig.
Honestly, Christianity and in fact, Abrahamic religions in general just perplex me. How can something as perfectly natural as personal sexual preference inspire so much fear and hate in a certain group of people?? Abrahamic religions are the ONLY known religions on this planet to openly advocate violence and genocide towards any human being who commits even ONE of their "sins", whether they believe in their religion or not.
Recently the gay community in Japan were in an uproar over internationally renowned actor/comedian/film director/TV personality Kitano "Beat" Takeshi when he openly compared homosexuality with bestiality on national TV, but that's still nothing on what the gay community in the US has to put up with from assholes like this guy.
In some ways the gay community is accepted more and in some ways less in Japan. Less in that there's no public discussion about it, kids aren't taught about it in school, TV and the media openly mock and ridicule it spreading the message that sexual minorities are all eccentrics at best and defects at worst, and there's no laws protecting gays in this country. However, we don't have any hostiles advocating violence and people screaming epithets like in the US.

This is a really awkward minefield but, from a certain point of view, and paraphelia that does not result in the production of children is essentially "the same" to a greater or lesser degree. Bizzarely, that makes incest perfectly acceptable, which explains certain things.

Re: Baptist Preacher Calls For BEATING THE GAY Out Of Childr
In fact, I would say incest is considerably MORE harmful from a physical standpoint than any kind of homosexual relationship, due to the higher risk of birth defects and developmental health problems.
I'd rather have no children than a child doomed to a short life expectancy.
