That's awful. They should be ashamed of such lack of human feelings, not show it around.. Following this way of thinking we all should just kill each other off, it would be better and fair...

I just read about what happened to Japan more, I had no idea it was that bad :( I so hope there will be no more nuclear related problems...

It feels so bad to sit helplessly, when such tragedy happens...

Echoing the wise words of Gandalf/Mithrandir/Olorin:

"There are many men who live who deserve death, but there are also many who die who deserve life. Would we take it upon ourselves to pass that judgment???
All we have to decide is what to do with the time given to us."

And now I tend to look upon it this way: the earthquake, tsunami, nuclear meltdown, oil fire, power outages, and volcanic eruptions all being the forces of Morgoth and Sauron making war upon Arda once again.
It is time for men and gods to join forces and battle the forces of destruction and chaos once more, as the end of the Dominion of Men draws near.

My sincerest condolences to all the families and friends who lost someone in this catastrophy. Japanese have a great experience to deal wit earthquakes, tsunamis and other natural disaster. People here in Germany are very impressed about the rationality and coolness of the Japanese People in this situation, but the information policy of the government seems to be a little inconsistent, especially about Fukujima. I hope very much the meltdown of the nuclear fuel can be prevented. I'm sure if a country like Japan with very high safety standards got no reliable control of nuclear energy, there is no safety for nuclear plants all over the world and everybody is living in the danger zone.

Sorry. I don't visit the Thoughts and Sharing thread because it's so long. I was wondering why there was no thread about this when I came back from school Friday.

Like some of you have said, I'm disgusted by the attitude some are having towards Japan's crisis. Pearl Harbor was decades ago(I hear similar shit in the black community towards white people. They're ancestors were the assholes. Not them. You can't always play the victim. I should know.).

I'm also sick of the "the world's going to end next year" crap. People said the same thing with 2000. I'll worry about the end when it happens. All that happened was an unfortunate timing of nature.

Situations like this are half the reason I have a hard time sitting through the news. I feel terrible, but can't do much of anything while at the same time, I have a life I can't put on hold. The other half is me can't understanding politics to save my life(which is why I almost never post in this section, but I do read the topics.).

I forgot you're living in Japan centurion. I know we're not close, but I'm glad you're okay. It must have been rough to see that on the morning news.

Yes, the end of the world bullshit is really annoying. Natural Phenomenon is just that...it is natural. This means that things like this will always happen. They have happened before. Many times over in fact, and in much more horrendous ways.

These Earthquakes, Eruptions, Tsunamis, Hurricanes, Fires, etc...they are nothing new. It is a cycle. This is Earth and she has her own way. These phenomenon is simply her way. I think part of the problem is the production of Mass Media. We have radios, tv, internet. We can learn about anything going on and where and when it happened at the drop of a hat.

Back when Tambora happened, there were no such things. She set us into a volcanic winter. Her fury was probably beyond our comprehension. Yet I bet most of the world had no idea that Tambora had erupted. It is not that she did not erupt, she did, but that people were not aware of it because they had nothing to tell them.

The same might also be said of other natural events. Yellowstone eruptions, Krakatau...hell take a look at Pompeii if you want to see the Apocalypse, as the apocalypase as I have no doubt the poor villagers thought it was- which it ended up being for many.

Now, I will say that I do believe that natural phenomenon is becoming more extreme, but I also think that that has to do with raising tempatures do to humans overuse of cardon and gases and pumping it into our atmosphere at rates unheard of within our history, add that to the fact that mother nature was already in her heat cycle...

Basically, this happens. More often than people care to admit. Until Earth is no more, she will continue to wreck havoc on humans simply by the act of being herself. Instead of fearing this and being stupid and irrational morons, we should start picking up some damn history books, get ready, get intelligent and do our best to prevent as many deaths as possible.

We cannot (and should not) stop nature from being herself, but we should be smart enough to learn how to live with her and be prepared for all she has to give. We will never save everyone, but knoweldge when put to good use could save many.

I think that Japan is proving this and it makes me proud that I'm half Japanese (not that you can tell I know).

It was actually quite heartwarming to see it so packed with people ready to help.

I'm also looking to help those people in any way that I possibly can through money or otherwise.

there are so many in this world who choose the "easy way out" of not caring if it doesn't directly affect them, but I've always believed that if someone's down, you give them your hand, whether it was the way I was raised, or if I've simply been cursed with feeling too much.....
It's just all part of having honor and integrity.

In my lifetime, I've simply realized there are two kinds of adults in this world: ones with honor and ones without.
The ones without are no friends of mine.....

Death before dishonour!

;)

I tried being apatheic for a while after my Grandmother died. Didn't work. Everything affects you, even if you won't admit it. No one is truly 'untouched' by events, only willfully unfeeling.

My husband actually told me that if we didn't have the kids already, we'd be hopping a flight to Japan to help with the relief effort. That man makes me proud, sometimes. As it is we will probably have to settle for a paltry monetary donation. :( I dislike being able to do nothing, but I will focus on what I can do and enjoy the fact that the death toll is not as monumental as it easily could have been. I will rejoice in the fact that there are many people who are and will be helping out and sending their thoughts and good vibes/prayers/what have you to the people of Japan. It does no good to focus on the bad. Negative people do not live forever. ;)

We grow as a people through disaster and catastrophies. Sometimes they show that the majority of humanity is good and willing to help their fellows who are fallen on hard times. Sometimes there are a few(extremely vocal) who say and do horrible things and make the whole of us look bad. I pity the fool who is hateful in the face of disaster!

I've been thinking about this post today, especially the part where you write

This is not my standard way of phrasing things, but since you'd mentioned "cursed" I will use it. I think you are actually blessed with feeling so much about other people's lifes - even if you do not know them personally. I would hate to see a world in which this trait would no longer exist.

Five Finger Death Punch...
They should do a gig at Subway!
I can see the commercials:
Five...
Five Finger...
Five Finger Death Punch!!!! At Subway!
With the band singing it, and then some dude talking about it.

I hate all the people who think the whole thing's funny and make stupid jokes about it. They're like idiots who would make a joke about thousands of people killed by a giant natural disaster chain reaction - oh wait, they ARE idiots who would make a joke about thousands of people killed by a giant natural disaster chain reaction. I hate people like that. And then there are the people who just blow it off, saying: "Oh, well, they'll probably be fine by tomorrow. It's nothing!". It's great to think positive, but those people really bother me.

I was right in the people predicting the end times crap... I had to remove someone from Facebook for saying that "September 11th terrorist attacks, January 11th Haiti earthquake, March 11th Japan earthquake...they are not coincidences, are you ready for Jesus' return?!" ARGH!!

It's the utter inhumanity of being more concerned with conspiracy theories and religious doomsday scenarios than with real suffering and loss. Fuck em' all with a dead hegehog, sideways and five times daily, is what I say.

Shit like this makes me regret the jokes I made about the relationship between anime and nukes over the years. God-dammit people, grow some fucking empathy.

It's not. Every house here has then as a matter of course in case Sellafield goes blip.

It's also pretty much worthless, since it only protects against the Iodine-131 isotope getting stuck in the thyroid, and does bugger all for things like: every other kind of radiation, shockwaves, EMP, plain ol' heat.....

Midi, I couldn't help it, but you remind me of that punk rock band "Half Japanese." :)

I heard today about the 60-year-old man who was rescued 10 miles out at sea, clinging to the roof of his house. He'd be out there for two days. Sadly, his wife had been swept away.
