Re: Earthquake and Tsunami in Japan
My friends and I are holding a disaster relief donations raffle night for Japan at our goth club in California. http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=209894239021870Could someone create a new topic about it in the Music section? I'm very busy organizing this and with school to build up 10 meaningful posts on the board before I am allowed to do so myself. :/ We'd all appreciate it to get the word out. Thanks. (~.^)

To-san, I am happy to hear about the people being found alive! That is something to rejoice about in the midst of the disasters befalling Japan.

I spent the day flyering shops. We hope to raise a lot.

It becomes worse each day and there is no end in sight. I think Japanese Government doesn't realize its extent, otherwise they would not ignore the recommendations of the IAEA for evacuation and let Tepco manage the disaster any longer. An Organisation which is well known for its neglect of keeping safety standards, its dirty tricks and lies to cover their faults and accidents in the last decades. Parts of the biospehre in Japan will probably get lost for a long time. The groundwater under Fukujima got 300 times more radiation than normal. (But Tepco said that's no problem) Pandorahs box is open, and can not be closed so fast. I don't pray but its time to replace the guilty ones. Its time for free access to information and transparency and its time to close the nuclear plants.

Re: Earthquake and Tsunami in Japan
Demon, this disaster is proof enough that just because something is cheap doesn't mean it's the better alternative. It does trouble me that they keep showing the Japanese government more concerned with trying to quell panic than warning the citizens of exactly how dangerous it is near the radiation areas.
I did see on one of the news segments(Wold News ABC?) some Japanese citizens handing out papers with info about the dangers of radiation, IIRC.

Re: Earthquake and Tsunami in Japan
I just have heard in the radio, that they only can check the contamination of each third worker in Fukujima, because much of the equipment is destroyed. Allegedly the workers must sleep on the naked ground near by the reactor. I can't blieve this really wolfmammy. Tepco has been warned about Tsunami risks 2 years before. They've got an Tsunami with 30 meter waves 60 years before in Japan. This guys make money with the risk for other people lives. There is a very cold logic. Don't trust them.

Re: Earthquake and Tsunami in Japan
Apparently they might put the highest threat level on the scale for Fukujima. So far only Chernobyl received it. Situation is more dire, however, since in Chernobyl they managed to contain the leak before it reached the underground waters.
Good news is that they managed to seal the leak of radioactive water and iodine. To hold the water of tragic levels of radation they pump out the less hazardrous water from the buildings into the ocean.
The plan of action seems probable, however it may yet be affected by any kinds of new disasters. The Chernobyl solution is hardly helpful here, besides, the costs of another steel sarcophagus might be too great a burden.
I pray that this did not conjure too many doomsayers up. The coming of 2012 is too much to stir their cauldron.

As of today's news, they have raised the threat level to "7" -- "the highest level on an international scale of nuclear accidents overseen by the International Atomic Energy Agency." Associated Press wrote: TOKYO – Japan raised the crisis level at its crippled nuclear plant Tuesday to a severity on par with the 1986 Chernobyl disaster... The new ranking signifies a "major accident" that includes widespread effects on the environment and health, according to the Vienna-based IAEA... The revision came a day after the government added five communities to a list of places people should leave to avoid long-term radiation exposure. A 12-mile (20-kilometer) radius already had been cleared around the plant... Full article here.-- Nephele

Re: Earthquake and Tsunami in Japan
New reproaches agaist the responsibles of Fukujima and the whole nuclear industry. The former home secretary Haraguchi Kazuhiro said that the radioactivity in the first days was a thousand times higher than told to the public. Nishio Masamichi the director of the Hokkaido Cancer Center who is the leading expert for radiation diseases in Japan called this a national crime, if it is true. He published an article which was translated in the Asia Pacific Journal. Quote: 2.The release of data from the expensive SPEEDI system, was delayed until March 23.[12 days] This delay resulted in unnecessary radiation exposure. “It is only conceivable that the high rate of radiation released was not reported because of fears of a panic.” 3.Former Minister for Internal Affairs Haraguchi Kazuhiro has alleged that radiation monitoring station data was actually three decimal places greater than the numbers released to the public. If this is true, it constitutes a “national crime”, in Nishio’s words. He follows with, “Giving us the truth once is much more important than saying ‘hang in there Japan!’ a million times.” 4.According to Japanese law, the rate of radiation exposure permitted for ordinary citizens is 1 mSv / year. This has been raised to 20 mSv / year in a “time of crisis”. Such a dramatic increase in permitted exposure is akin to “taking the lives of the people lightly”. Nishio believes that 20 mSv is too high, especially for children who are far more susceptible to the effects of radiation.
If you want to know what went wrong, read the full article here
