What do you think of normal-looking goths? - Good/Bad?

I've been goth inside ever since I was a little kid. I've always been morbid, dark, individualistic, etc. Half the time I dress "normal" because I don't feel like dressing up. Right now, I'm wearing jeans, a dark purple sweater, and white tennis shoes.

Well, if there's a Gothic Mafia, there needs to be rules:
1) A system must be established to induct individuals into the "family". Which raises the question: how does a Goth Mafioso get "made"?
2) Punks and rivetheads can work for the "family", but they can never truly be part of the "family".
3) Everyone will need flashy nicknames. *glances around at everyone's handles* Hmm . . . we may have that covered already.
4) Must find 'legitimate businesses' to mask illegal activities.
5) Must find illegal activities.
6) Must come up with 'signature weapon'. I nominate pinking shears.
7) Must find alternative to violin case for hiding said signature weapon. I nominate those little coffin boxes all the teeniegothers carry around.
Must find rival "family" with which to wage war. Being that fans of country and hip hop are both far too dangerous to tangle with, I nominate polka fanatics. We could kick the crap outta those mooks . . .
9) Must find appropriate animal to decapitate and place in enemies' beds. I'm going to go with dolphins; it would really freak someone out to find a dolphin head in one's bed and besides, they are evidently the perverts of the animal world (for those who missed that other thread, they are the only animals other than humans that have sex for pleasure; eeeeeeeeeew . . . .).
10) Must, must, MUST have edgy TV show that makes the Gothic Mafia 'cool'. We could call it "The Altos" . . .

Nachtzeher, a few more posts like that one and I will be busted for my "illegal activity" of reading goth.net at work when I should actually be working. Given away by my own laughter.
However, to post something slightly closer to the topic...
Rossman, in my personal opinion, it is what you think and feel that matters not the opinion of anyone else. Regardless of whether they are goths or mundanes.
People tend to have problems when they attempt to fit me into any of their neat little pigeonholes. I get the
"You're a goth 'coz you usually wear black" (If you say so...)
"You're not a goth 'coz you don't dye your hair" (And this matters because.....?)
"You're not a goth 'coz you don't listen to Manson" (Oh puh-lease)
"You can't be a goth, you look too 'normal'"
I get these lines from both sides and quite frankly I couldn't care less. Ususally. Sometimes it bugs me a little. However, I class myself as a goth and as far as I am concerned _that_ is what matters.
Hmmm. That seems to have turned into something somewhere between a ramble and a rant. I guess at the moment I am letting things bug me. Oh well. Give me a couple of minutes and I'll be back to my usual self.
Doth (it's my opinion no one else is required to agree with it)

Ok about this whole Mafia thing
Signature weapon... pinking shears might be a good choice.. just make sure you get LARGE ones. The coffin box case they sell coffin shaped guitar cases (they're nice and black with red accents if i remember correctly)
one other thing to add.. We would need a catch phrase..
There's my limited imput....

So sorry to be the cause of workplace strife, Doth ol' chum. I'll try hard to be less of a dangerous poster in future. (:
As for the topic at hand . . .
I think that it is actually more fun to be "incognito" some of the time. If one is always all dressed up, then the thrill of dressing up will wither into the mundane. Besides, I simply love wandering around in jeans and a t-shirt by day and then returning to the same stomping ground at night, this time clad in a floor-length trench coat and leather pants. I think some people suspect that I have dissociative identity disorder . . .
Bottom line: dress how you feel like dressing. No one is going to revoke your Goth Decoder Ring if you purchase khakis at the Gap. Conformity is for the trend-sheep and the norms; you are what you choose to be and 'Goth' is just a possible label for the sum of those choices.

I would like to be a part of this Gothic Mafia, and would like to set up the gudelines..
1.Initiation into the "family"-Two hours in a bright room with nothing but Slipknot playing. If they come out just as gothic as before, they be entered into our family.
2.punks and rivetheads as servants-only on weekends and special occasions
3.flashy nicknames-you're on your own...as long as I get to be "Iron Balls" McGee.
4.finding "legimate business"-nightclub,duh!
5.illegal buisness-hmmm....importing illegal cats?
6."signature weapon"-pinking shears do well.
7.alternitive to violin case-Hot Topic bags...just to "blend" in.
8.rival families-nu-metalers,rappers,italians,dutch...there's variety all around!
9.appropriate animal to decapitate-bulldogs and rotwiellers!
10."edgy" new show-This "Altos" program...will it have bagels? If it does,Im all for it.

The makeup of a true goth is on the inside, not on how they dress. Ive met many goths that dont dress like a stereotypical goth, and still hold to the same intrests as the guy that wears the fishnet shirt with spikes and boots. But thats just my point of view. *)

The board hasn't been working for me ever since I posted that once, so I haven't been able to reply.
Thanks everyone. Yet I saw a post near the begining saying something about nu-metal, and how people think that's what goths listen to and in reality it's not. Well, I just have to stand up for nu-metal for a second here. A lot of people like to bash it to no extent, but I love it. I guess I'm angust(or however it's spelled) and find nu-metal really realyl kool. I like yelling into a mic, because it gets rid of all that anger and crap. But whatever, that's enough of that.
Thank for informing me. I guess I'm goth then. I think I'll be posting here more.

Theres been heaps of debate about nu-metal in the past. The reason people get slightly narky about it on this board is the assumption some people have associating it with Goth when that is not true at all.

As Mes said, it's not the fact that you like it... have a ball with liking it, just don't run around saying it's Gothic music.
It's the fact that it ends up being the "I'm goth because I listen to <insert nu-metal band of the moment>" thing that shits me and many other goths, not the fact that some people listen to it.

kmonsta wrote: For lame-O classification purposes, I'm a corporate goth. I wear mainly black and dark colors to work, and usually jeans at home, and on the weekends and club night, I tend to bust out the "big guns" as it was perfectly put but I know a lot of people my age that are this way. We know in our hearts that we're goth, and know that the way we present ourselves doesn't matter,
I think that anybody that is of an age where they have to earn their own living and want something more than minimum wage learns to adapt to the Corporate Goth lifestyle. Most people I know fit that bracket... you can still tell they're not "mundanes" but they also have to tone it down because the bottom line is that they have to eat and pay their rent.
Not everyone is fortunate enough to work somewhere where they really don't care what you look like, like a hole in the wall alternative record store, or even a place like Hot Topic where dressing up/looking freaky is encouraged.

So, you're saying just because there are many new nu-metal bands, and they gain popularity quickly that someone can not relate them with being goth? Can I not say "I'm goth because I feel I'm goth, I look sorta goth, and I listen to hard music, such as Mudvayne, Slipknot, Korn, etc etc"? Or, are you saying that you are mad at the people who become goths because it's the popular thing to do?

Nu-metal is NOT goth. They are two different genres of music. If the bulk of your music is nu-metal then you are not goth. Thats what we get annoyed with. Its like apples and oranges. They are two very different things. You need to read this thread. It should clear up what is and is not Goth.
