Last weekend Yahoo! Groups (not sure about the other services as the Groups are all I use) was down... they've since come back up with a rather nasty new feature.

Your account now has such a thing as "Marketing Preferences" ... i.e. Spam. And if you have any kind of Yahoo! account, those settings are now all set to "Yes" (send me spam!), this includes your postal address and phone number if you've filled that out in there.

So anyone who has any kind of Yahoo! account, for mailing lists or email or whatever, you might want to go and edit your account preferences on the site or your personal details might be up for grabs by spam databases. You may have already noticed more spam in your email account... I noticed an increase this week before I found out about this and changed my settings quickly.

Lilith - fed up with having to do all kinds of spam trapping.

Thankfully I don't have a Yahoo email account. Of course, MSN in't all that better when it comes to Spam: I've acually started using the junk mail filter but MSN Messenger still tells me when I get this unwanted crap, which means that I get all elated at recieving an email (sad as I am) only to find out that it's someone trying to sell me either hard core porn or a penis enlarger.

I somehow keep getting Italian dating service spam. I don't know why, it's the weirdest thing, and I've asked them to kindly stop or I'll sic my lawyer on them in two languages (I have no lawyer but they don't know that). Of course, they don't seem to get the clue. So fugheddaboudem!

Usually replying to spam does nothing more than prove to them that the account is valid and working. You'd be lucky if they actually even read any responses they got.

Ideally complaining to their isp's would be most efficient.

http://www.spamcop.net is a good place for spamreporting. I think they ended their free reporting service, but have a cheap monthly or yearly service which I'm considering getting to report spammers with especially with spam becoming an increasingly large problem.

Oh, and any spam you get saying "this isn't spam, we send in accordance to some Senate legislation" is lying. There is no such legislation, and Spam per definition is unsollicited mail... and if you didn't ask for it, it's unsollicited.

Lilith - who should track down an amusing anti-spam saga she read a few months back.

For several months I kept recieving emails advertising a Goth club night. I wasn't too bothered because I like to hear about new clubs opening near me, but this one was a bit less local then I would have expected.

It was in Italy.
