The last veteran of World War I was a waitress, and for 90 years no one knew her name.

Florence Green, a member of Britain's Royal Air Force who was afraid of flying, died in England on Saturday [Feb. 4, 2012], two weeks shy of her 111th birthday. She was believed to have been the war's last living veteran – the last anywhere of the tens of millions who served.

Mrs. Green, who joined the R.A.F. as a teenager shortly before the war's end, worked in an officer's mess on the home front. Her service was officially recognized only in 2010, after a researcher unearthed her records in Britain's National Archives.

Full story here.

I only want to know more about how she lived and coped with nearly an entire generation of men dying in her time. I hope her descendants recorded for posterity the experiences she may have related to them.

Florence Beatrice Patterson Green's contributions to the war effort were humble, but her spirit was strong. With no disrespect to deceased and celebrated pop stars, I propose that the life of this waitress/veteran, supercentenarian is infinitely more interesting and worthy of reflection.

Wow, sounds like she was an interesting person. I hope she rests in peace and I wish her family well.

That was a very nice article to find, Nephele. Thanks!

And remember, to paraphrase Yogi Berra: The key is to live to 100. Very rarely do you hear about people dying after that age.

In the last few years we've lost all of those who managed to hang on from that era. Soon we'll have to rely on books for WWII aswell. It's sad really.

Another piece of history lost to the ages. I hop she passed peacefully.

She sounded like an amazing woman. I hope she passed peacefully and I'm thinking of her family.

Perhaps it's only what this society deserves, since there appears to be so much more interest in the loss of pop stars than in the loss of people who served as living links to the historic past.

I really hope not Nephele. :( I just wish some people would realize what a major role these individuals had on history.

Thanks, Dragonwings. I may retaliate against the pop star mania by putting up more postings of far more interesting people to celebrate, and also to mourn the passing of. Such as...

Karl Slover

Edith Fellows

Nancy Wake
