Fortunately I live in Cattle Country, USA (also known as Colorado) so there are a lot of places that raise cows around here that I can go and visit. My idea of compassion is by eating animals that one either catches oneself or that are raised humanely - not feedlot type situations which is what most of the meat industry is.

I admit my years as a vegetarian have made me very aware of the abuses animals suffer at the hands of "food producers", which means I will make damn sure I know where my meat comes from if I do choose to eat it.

The farm where I get my veggies during the spring/summer/early fall also has grass fed and pastured beef as well as pork and chicken. I have seen the conditions these animals live in and they are given a very good life. I still don't know if I could eat them though. I guess time will tell.

I second Legend with the flat-iron steaks (courtesy of my dad via Omaha Steaks) which I pan-fry in olive oil with the slightest bit of sea salt and pepper. When the steak is resting, I fry a few scoops of Texmati rice in the juice along with assorted vegetables.

Last year, however, I got hold of some deer-jerky and I have to say I think this meat needs to be issued at school and given out to all to build our appreciation for eating something that runs through our front yards.

I like meat...with cheese.

Kinda random, but I don't get the people who eat meat but then go out and say, "DOWN WITH FUR!" or judge others because they wear fur. I'm like, "Didn't you just have a hamburger for lunch?!"

Perhaps. But, hopefully, the cow wasn't killed by being captured in a leghold trap and left to starve or chew off its own leg in agony before someone finally came to get it. Or skinned alive (a frequent practice in some Asian countries with fur-bearing animals), or had a killing electric rod jammed up its ass so as not to spoil its coat.

Not that modern factory farming for food animals in industrialized nations is pleasant, either. But you should look into what happens to animals on fur farms, or fur-bearing animals trapped in the wild.

Who thinks that fur looks better on live wolves, foxes, etc.

Yeah, I know they kill them in horrible ways. It's sad, really. And I know it sounds kind of mean, but I just like to eat meat. It's rude and whatnot, and if I could choose how the meat was made, I'd do something like get it after it was already dead (fresh, not been sitting there for a while because I could get sick...) so there's no harm done. Then I'd get what was left of the fur.

But I know that's not how it's done in real life. I don't know, if it came to actually going out and getting my own meat, I don't know if I would be able to do it. I mean, if I was starving, yeah, but then I would feel bad, too. It's a lot easier to eat meat when you're not thinking about where it came from. I think torturing them is even worse. I'm thinking "okay, if you're gonna get it for its meat, fine, but make it quick, don't prolong it"

At the same time, however, I feel like it (eating animals, not skinning them or killing them just for the sake of fur) is natural because I know a lot of animals would eat us if we couldn't outrun/outsmart them. As is the predator/prey relationship.

EDIT: Steak and bleu cheese! That's my favorite meaty snack.

I will try any type of animal at least once, I'm an equal opportunity meat eater. My favorite kind of meat is chicken. As a diabetic, meat is my friend because of the lack of carbs, not to mention I just love it.

Gotta be a nice, bloody sirloin steak for me. Medium rare, or rare. Can't beat it. I'm also a fan of chicken, turkey and beef.

Couldn't survive if I had to give up meat- I like it too much. Haven't tried venison yet. Know people who have had crocodile but I've never tried it. Want to cos I'm curious.

Crocodile is quite good, it honestly tastes a bit like chicken (yes i know, how cliche but it does IMO lol).

Same here, I've started eating a lot more chicken, occassionally going for beef or pork. I don't really have a favourite meat dish, as long as it's edible I'll scoff it.

I love poultry, especially dark chicken meat, turkey, and duck. I love a good rare steak with a peppery pan sauce drizzled over it. I also make my own stocks and broths and they are a delight indeed.

I'm not really a huge fan of pork. I don't mind bacon or pork chops that much. I like fish in the raw but don't care for a ton of it cooked. Shellfish, however, I very much like. Crab, lobster, and oysters are probably my favorite sea critters.

I am a huge fan of beef. I love a really crispy beef roast that is all rare and hot and juicy inside. I could just eat the whole thing like a wolf!

Also pork ribs slow cooked in a savoury sauce to tender perfection.

Pepperoni and beef jerky are also addictions of mine.

I would love to be a vegetarian, but there are so many veggies that disagrees with me it wouldn't be worth my while :(

I do prefer white meat (turkey and chicken). I've really gone off fish recently as the taste is always far too strong and it repeats on me for hours afterwards!

Pork does strange things to my stomach, and as much as I love lamb and beef, too much of them can leave me feeling so sluggish as they're very heavy meats to me.

As many of you know I have been a vegetarian for about 5 years and my SO has been a veg-head for 11. Well, my SO has decided that he would like to transition back to eating meat. I may or may not also go back to eating meat, but I would absolutely have to make sure that I do it in as compassionate a way as possible. I'm still up in the air about the idea.

That being said (and inspired by ittybittybat's post about cheese) - what meaty treats do you like?

When I still ate meat I was a big fan of cured Italian meats like salumi and proscuitto. I wasn't a big fan of chicken, but I was also a pro steak griller.

How about you?

Everything chicken, Miss SPider.
